Black Hills South Dakota Campgrounds

Post by david_iona »

Heading out for the Black Hills next week to meet a friend for a week of sightseeing in the Black Hills and would appreciate some recommendations for RV parks. We will be basing out of the Custer area for a few days then possibly north to the Hill City area. Thanks for the recommendations in advance.

The KOA Mt Rushmore park is nice we have stayed there twice. Large park just down the street from Mt R. Pretty central for the black hills attractions. Here is their link http://www.koa.com/where/sd/41125/

I agree with Mike, the KOA there is pretty nice. Stayed there twice also, and they have a shuttle bus service to the night lighting ceremony which is something to see.

Mike, you better go back to a Dodge, from the looks of your signature that new Chevy did not last you long.

Well, I guess Virgil DID post a pic of our new Dually!!!!!! LOL! Luckily, we still have the Gray Goose in the wings to take us out to New Mexico... The one Virgil showed you all would be a bit uncomfortable in a rain bad weather....... might get my hair wet... NOT a pretty picture!!!! d

This is a bit late, but the parks in Spearfish, both the city and the new one just east of town are great. We were there the end of May and love that area.

On my trip out west next year I have been looking at RV parks near Custer, The town seems to be centrally located to all sites and thought that would be a good basecamp. Any recommendations on campgrounds in that area?

We stayed at the Beaver Lake RV Park outside the town of Custer. The location was very central to our travels and the town of Custer is small. quaint. The owners of Beaver Lake are great folks who also RV in the off season and were very accomodating. We enjoyed the park so much that we changed our original plans which were to move in a couple of days north somewhere and instead stayed at Beaver Lake for the entire time we were in the area. I have pictures of the campground at home on separate files and when I return next month I will post a couple for you to look over. The park is almost like staying in a forest service campground but one has full hookups and a nice pool. It is off the highway but the road noise is non-exisistent. I will stay with them on the next trip as well. The best advice I got of the Black Hills area that I can pass along is make sure and time your visit to Mount Rushmore for the late afteroon/early evening to take in the night show at Mount Rushmore.
