McDowell Nature Preserve & Campgrounds, Charlotte, NC
We stayed at this fine campground August 25 - 30, 2010. This is an update to previous posts. Each site has water, picnic table, fire ring and a choice of either 30 or 50 amps. McDowell now has two sites (R5 & R6) that offer sewer service. This small campground has only 13 RV sites but all are paved. The RV sites cost $26.00 a day. They also have both drive-in and walk to tent camping sites. Some of the tent sites have tents with cots plus one small cabin. Don’t worry about setting up your satellite; they have over 23 over-the-air TV channels. R2 is one of the larger drive-through sites and R7 has a good balance between size and privacy.
There’s only one bath house/bathroom building but is more than adequate for the size of this campground. It’s one of the nicest facilities I’ve ever seen. Each bathroom has its own shower with sink, hand soap and one of those high speed hand dryers that you need to wear hearing protection before use.
There’s so many things to do you probably won’t spend much time in the campground. McDowell Nature Preserve is located in Mecklenburg County, NC about 20 miles south of downtown Charlotte. We visited Brattonsville historic village (where the movie the Patriot was filmed), Nascar Hall of Fame, a car show at Charlotte Motor Speedway (old Lowe’s Motor Speedway) and US National Whitewater Center (for rafting). Carowinds Amusement Park is also nearby. Finally there’s the McDowell Nature Center which has interesting exhibits and it's free.
