We are planning a trip to the east coast and I have relatives in Washington and Fredericksburg, VA. Found the Fredericksburg KOA and a Travel Trailer Village (national park) between Washington and Fredericksburg on line. Would be staying about a week. Is spring the best time to go? I'm thinking early May. Any recommendations on where to stay? Best way to get around Washington? Thanks

I can't help you on the RV parks but the easiest way to get around in the DC area is the metro. We stayed in in Bethesda Md and used the metro to get into Washington DC and from one area to the other then walked and used trolleys to get around. Parking inside Washington DC is difficult at best. We planned our trips outside DC so that we only had to use a rental car for two days when we went to Mount Vernon and out lying areas and since you will have your pickup that will not be anything you will need to rent.

You are probably aware of it but if you go through your Representatives or Senators office they can get you tickets for a tour of the Capitol, often guided by one of their aides and also the White House.

I have stayed at Fredericksburg CG it is a nice quiet campground. But it is a long way fron DC to the metro. It was 45 miles to the nearest metro station.Took us 2 and1/2 hours to drive it in the middle of the day. The VRE begins in Fredericksburg but your time is greatly reduced in DC by the train schelude.

Last time we stayed at Cherry Hill RV park in College Park Md. nice campground and was only about 10 minutes away from a metro station.

For Washington, DC look at Cherry Hill RV park, due north of DC, in College Park, Maryland. It is a 15 minute drive due south into DC. They run shuttles and tour access from their park. If you want to take your own veh. into DC, head south past Univ. of Maryland, into DC, and head to Union Station (train depot). It is near the capital, and has covered parking for cheap fee, all day parking. The city is yours from there. Old Town Trolley, caught in front of Union Station, is a wonderful way to get around, and see the city. Off and On as you wish at scenic sights. Best way to go for first timers.

We have stayed at the Fredricksburg KOA and Cherry Hill RV Park in College Park, MD. for D.C. sightseeing, Cherry Hill is definately the way to go. Cherry Hill is just a five minute drive to the Greenbelt subway station which will take you anywhere you want to go in and around D.C. The Fredricksburg KOA is a nice little KOA way south of D.C. and way off the beaten path, nice little campground though.

Cherry Hill RV Park has an excellent cancellation policy too. You can extend or shorten your stay with no penalties, whatsoever.

When you go to Greenbelt, make sure to purchase a parking card and load it with the correct amount of money, you cannot leave the parking lot without it as there are no attendants, just a machine to swipe the card.

We just left Cherry Hill RV Park in College Park Maryland. Large RV park, well maintained, and very helpful and organized with information and tours of DC. Metro is one offramp from park (green line) with large parking lot or metro bus stops in park.
