Traveling highway 2 Michigan to Montana

Post by WILDAA »

My wife and I are planning a trip to Glacier NP. We are thinking of taking Highway 2 thru the UP of MI to Glacier. Has anyone made this trip? Would be interested in any and all opinions. Camping, gas, road conditions, mechanical help, etc. or should we take route around Chicago and take freeways. Thanks to all. David and Debby

We did the Montana to MI route. We got off 2 as the more we looked, the less options for cg. The road was good and there is plenty of fuel. Just not a lot of cg's to choose from. Especially with a 38'er.

Getting a space in a campground could be tough in the oil field areas in North Dakota according to news reports. Rob was through the area lately, he'd have a better idea, but I'd reserve spaces in advance along the route.

I have driven 2 from Mi to Minot North Dakota and it is a great road as long as you're not in a hurry. The trip thru the U.P. is beautiful as is Duluth MN., Grand Rapids MN., The Bad River Indian Reservation in WI, and the flat vastness of North Dakota. I can't comment on campgrounds because my trips were for work and I was in a pickup with no camper. Most of the way it is a 4 lane road but it's not a limited access so every few miles you have to slow down going thru all of the small towns. That is probably the only draw back.

In my pickup it took me about 20-24 hours drive time from my house at the time (Carsonville MI is 65 miles east of Saginaw MI) to get to Minot.

I personally very much dislike driving thru Chicago and if I ever am forced to do it I will probably go thru late at night or very early in the morning.

Thanks to one and all. We have been on line looking for CG, they are there, but it's work. leaving the last week of Aug. 2013. will definately make reservations pre labor day. Going to Glacier first then down to Yellowstone, Tetons then Mt. Rushmore, Bandlands SD then probably chance around Chicago then north to home. Have to save up for gas. 2005 Ford SD withv10. 2003 29 bird. I'll be asking alot more questions. Been camping with TT for 12 years, Only been 50 miles from home. All new adventures.
Thanx again, what great folks.

Be prepared to possibly get snow in Glacier,Yellowstone or Tetons. It can snow there any time of year.

Jeff is absolutely right. When we were in Bismarck a few months ago we talked about going north and taking 2 west since we hadn't been that way. I was talking to a fellow RVer at the CG and he was emphatic in saying that was a bad idea. He said we would not find a place to stay within 200 miles of any town and the truck traffic is horrendous.

we went across on 2 abt 8 yrs ago. there isn't much on it thru N Dacota. we picked it up at Grand Forks and went west. didn't have any problems finding campgrounds. that may be a different story if there is an oil boom there...fuel was a different story. made a couple of "just in time" fuel stops along the way. the one that i almost got in trouble with was due to me going thru willingston with half a tank and think there would be plenty west of there. as i crossed over into montana, i noticed that i wasn't meeting cars. no cars, no fuel sales. not sure if it was that fuel stop or the next that i made it to abt I-15 and down to 1/8 tank. found diesel the filled up again near I-15 even though i didn't need it.

bottom line, if u start looking when u get around half, u won't have any problem.

when u get to yellowstone, i recomend finding a park then making a pass thru bear tooth pass (US 212) which goes into the NE side of yellowstone. the view is fantastic. for us, that made our yellowstone trip. u really don't want to try it with a trailer in tow.
