Mileage per day

Would like some input regarding the amount of miles you drive per day. We plan on making a 4000 mile trip in 3weeks time. Have not travelled very far with my rig. Just would like some pointers. Thanks-Dave

It kind of depends on how you like to travel and when you need to be at your destination. In our care we like the travel more than the final destination for the most part. We take back roads whenever we can and explore. Most days we travel 200 to maybe 300 miles, than stay a few days before moving on. The most we’ve done in a day was 550 miles, but didn’t like it. Again it depends on your needs.

Do a little math. Say you 4000, if you drive half the days, that is 400 miles per day. That is to much for to long. Chris

I've pulled the 'Bird 500 - 600 miles in a day, but stayed put for a day or two after that. Pulling a big trailer demands a lot from a driver, which is why commercial truck drivers have Federal limits on how many hours they can work, and mandatory rest before they can get behind the wheel again. I'd rethink your trip. It wouldn't be an enjoyable experience.

I agree, we try to limit the days travel to 300 miles max. That way we don't have to be in a rush to leave in the morning and arrive early enough in the afternoon to be able to set up in the day light and see the sights if we wish. Of course we aren't tied to a calendar most of the time. If time is a factor I recommend shorter trips so you can see the sights and enjoy the trip. My sitterdowner doesn't like more than 5-6 hours in the truck seat.

I think you might be better off to think driving hours rather than miles driven. Set your time around driving hours, some roads will just beat you up and cut into your miles driven, while others you can just sit back and go. I feel that six hours is a good time frame some times more some times less.

It really depends on the type of trip you're embarking on. If its a destination type then put in a couple of 8 - 10 hour days and then take a day off. If its a see the USA type then you need to plan in detail what you want to see and what you're willing to pass up.

In 2010, we did the Yellowstone and Glacier rally's. Down thru Chicago getting there and thru the UP on the way home. 4700 miles in 3 weeks and 2 days.

It can be done. You need to plan every stop in advance.

I try to keep it to around 250 miles per day and no more then 300. You can get tired and thats when mistakes happen. When we were younger and had to get there and back in a short amount of time we put in the 10 hour days but no more.

We are on the first leg of our trip to Branson from Riverbank Ca to Albuquerque NM which was 1050 miles. We drove 240 miles just over 4 AND 1/2 hours the first day then spent the night. The second day we traveled 460 miles just over 7 hours driving time. The final day we drove 320 miles which was about 5 hours driving time. The actual time is a little longer because we stop about every two hours to walk the driver and the dog or get diesel! We will have been in Albuquerque for 5 days before moving on to the next stop which will be 180 miles.

My average is 350 miles per day, get off the highway early rest and get ready for the next days drive. I have done over 500 miles two days in a row and it beats you up. If you are limited on your time you may have to travel long days, if you have the time to travel, then take it easy.

The only time that we travel more than 300 miles a day is to get to the destination and stay for a while. When I go salmon fishing in NY it is a 630 mile trip that I do in one day. We leave at 5am and get there in time to set up camp and get ready to fish the next morning. We stay for a week before we head back. We normally have at least 2 drivers for that trip. It sure is nice to switch off every couple of hours.

For the last few years when we go to Myrtle Beach we make a 2 day trip to travel 560 miles. Besides when we stop overnight we are camping. That's what we go for so one night in a different park is not bad at all. When we arrive at the beach we have plenty of time set up the camper and take a walk on the beach after supper. On the road more than 7 hours is very tiring. Doing it day after day takes all of the fun out of the trip.

So Dave we have heard back from you. How did you decide the trip? You never clearly defined what the 4000 miles was? Was it many stops along the route or 2000 to a destination, stay a week and a half and return home?

We drive the 1600+ miles home from Arizona in 4 days. In five I could do 2000. That is driving, eating and sleeping!!! NOT DONE FOR FUN!

Well............. We are going from MI to Glacier via route 2. Then down to Yellowstone/Tetons, then Badlands SD then home, in 23 days. I figure 5-6 days to get out and about the same going home. The longest day I have planned is 380 miles most are around 250. Thanks for all the ideas. Please continue to give more.

Dave, I would NOT go Route 2 thru North Dakota. With the oil boom around Minot and Williston you will have a hard time finding a camp spot and the traffic and the road construction is HORRIBLE. We came thru there this fall......never again. I would recommend that you take I-94.

I'm with Torben. This Spring we were traveling home from Madison and was advised emphatically not to take highway 2. So we stayed on 94 to 90 then home.
