Big Tree RV Resort

Post by RetiredFifthWheeler »

We recently spent the month of February at the above mentioned resort and would like to describe our experience. This resort is part of the Carefree network and is in Arcadia, Florida. It is within walking distance of several restaraunts, a Walmart, a Walgreens, a couple of produce stands and a small strip shopping center with a grocery, hardware and tractor supply store.

Big Tree is a decent sized resort where about 70% of the lots are now occupied with a park unit or converted trailer.

We had made reservations last August. The residents there claimed that normally that is too late to make a reservation, but this year there were a few spots available most of our stay.

We paid $604 for the month plus our electricity ($78). We did arrive a day early and were not charged extra. The management of the campground was efficient and busy. In part I believe due to the fact that they had so many residents with a park model and paying annual rates, there were well organized activities and plenty of them. The residents at Big Tree have their own council, block captains, and run almost all of the activities themselves. We attended four dinners during our stay that never cost more than $5/person. They also had a pancake, egg and sausage breakfast every other Saturday at $2.50/person. There were activites in the clubhouse multiple times a day. The people there were friendly and encouraging.

Arcadia is part of the agricultural area of Florida, and there was not that much in the way of shopping or entertainment and no movie theaters. We did take a tour of a local orange grove.
Image
We also visited Myakka State Park, about 25 miles away and took an airboat tour.

There were alot of these natives around, lol.
Image
We also walked a trail that led to a treetop canopy walkway and tower.
Image
We met a very nice couple next door to us who actually lives within two hours of our home.
Image
In conclusion, we found the Big Tree resort to be a nice place to visit. If it were nearer more shopping and entertainment, it would be ideal. But then it would cost more also. (Next year's monthly rate will be $641 + electric.)

and some other activities areas- pool and hot tub, billard room, shuffle board, gazebo with dance patio, and horeshoe pits to the right.

I do too. Especially monthly rates and such. I just called a C.G. in Panama City FL for a price for a week early in May and it was $576  . A little rich for my blood!

The weather in Arcadia was relative paradise. Vast majority of days highs between 75-85. Lows in the high 50s- lower 60s. Only one real stormy day as this is dry season. One night it got cold enough to turn on the gas furnace to protect the water lines.

We left because our twins come home from college for spring break this month (seperate weeks). They keep telling us now that they're 21 they're adults. We believe we're going to take them up on that premise next year.
