Question about ordering, specifically countertops

Post by danr1707 »

We are thinking about upgrading to the 34TS. DW is worried about countertop space.

What is the Extenda Countertop (I know it's flimsy)? and what is the countertop extension?

The order sheet it shows the:

Extenda Counter= $188
Counter Extension= $75

That is why we are confused.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Dan

Hello Dan,

Some models have the option of two countertop extentions, I think your model can be ordered with two. The Extenda Counter is longer and folds up and down allowing you to extend the backside of the countertop facing into the living area. The counter extension is smaller and folds up and down into the walking area at the end of the counter. They both are made of the same material your counters are and are mounted on two folding support hinges.

I made my own fold up/down counter extension. Went out and found the largest cutting board I could find, then ordered the fold down hinges through the internet at https://www.hardwaresource.com/index.asp and the whole setup ran me about $45.00. I had to reinforce the inside counter wall before mounting the brackets, but it works fine. I had previously taken pictures of the OEM fold down shelves at a Cardinal dealershop and use the images as my model.

Here is a picture of the 75 dollar option. Click on this link then select full size then placed the magnifying glass over the counter top extension and click on it to blow it up. It will give you an excellent view of it.

Now, the first thing you will notice is that it doesn't match the counter's width, why, I am not sure. Maybe they didn't want it be be wider than the cabinet's base so you won't bang it on your knee when you walk by it.

The other thing you will see is they didn't make it cope to the counter's edge, so that when you raise it into place there is a considerable gap. I would have thought they would make it cope like a flip up table leaf. Even a square butt fit would have been better than a routed edge like they did here.

The one thing you won't notice is that when it was raised, it drooped and didn't even match the counter level. I had to take care of all that.

If you are good at woodworking, I suggest you do your own. The counter top surface can be matched if you can find it. usually Wilsonart, Formica, or Nevamar are the main name brands.

Thanks for the quick responses. I think that I will make my own. I don't mind drilling holes in my new fiver.
