Is formaldehyde an issue?

Post by JimOMartin »

As I'm sure most of you have seen. There have been reports of high formaldehyde levels in the trailers used for the Katrina victims. My question is this, given most trailers are built the same way, wouldn't our own rigs also contain these elevated levels? Given that I'm a weekend warrior, I'm not worried, but is there any impact to the full-timers? Just wondering.

Isn't that the stuff that makes your eyes burn really bad when you go inside??? As far as I can remember...we never had that problem in ours. But boy I sure remember going in some that two steps in and I was turning around and going right back out.

The trailers being used are special made, as in they don’t have all the options or trailer marking a retail trailer has. I know this because I was looking to purchase one after the Hurricanes struck Florida.
These trailer have a strong formaldehyde smell because they just came off the manufacturing line and they haven’t had a chance to air out. After they have had a chance to air out, there is no hazard.

I'm not sure what your smelling is formaldehyde there are glues sealers and so forth also. I was in the funeral business for 11 years and I can tell when i even get close to formaldehyde my eyes go crazy. (hmm maybe thats my problem) I'm not saying that there is not any in our trailers but there are a lot of other chemicals also.

Jim good to see you on here again :D
