Recall of some Dometic Refrigerators:

Post by wild acres »

Found this on RV.net. These are the words of a RV.net member. Thought it might be help-full to some of the club members:--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My husband and I are trying to let everyone know about a serious hazard in certain RVs. Two weeks ago we were awakened by the smoke alarm in our Forest River Cardinal 5th wheel. Within the hour our 2-1/2 year old unit was totalled. We were all OK but I found out the Dometic refrigerator was recalled for this potential fire condition but we were never notified.

I since learned a friend had hers burn up in their driveway taking their house siding with it. Please make your friends and loved ones aware. Here is the NHTSA recall listing.

Thanks for the tip! First thing in the AM check for me as we are about to have the rig as our only home in 5 days, luckily it's in the driveway with out the fridge running. Sorry for your loss and hope the insurance is kicking in!

I have a model RM 2862, but it seems I don't have one of the serial numbers listed. What is the "9999" after the model numbers?
A friend of mine had a problem with a nuke box starting up by itself (also a fire hazard). After no satisfaction from the factory, a couple of years ago, he replaced it. Recently, I have seen a recall on the same microwave, but my friend was already out his money.
I encourage folks to check this out if it applies to you.

When you call Dometic, you will be prompted by a recording to provide your name, address and phone number. An information packet will be mailed to you once they have it available.

My thanks again to John.

I have the Model RM2862 also, but my serial # starts with 425, and if I'm reading those numbers right, I'm safe. I hope...lol

Got the model 2852, but not in the SN zone.
Question-Do you folks leave the refrig climate control switch on or off? Mine is in the off position and works great for me that way. Thanks ahead of time for any feed back.

The climate control switch is just to keep condensation from building on the outside in humid weather. No other effect in leaving it on all the time.

I don't have a climate control. But I do have a switch for adjusting the temperature. I guess that would be similar to a climate control. I keep that in the middle. Keeps my cokes and beer cold. 8)

Dometic recall

Post by wild acres »

Hi again everyone, I looked inside the www.safercar.gov site and I think the 9999 refers to the years a model was made. I think the 9999 is "all years for that model" The site says Apr 97 thru May 2003, and the way some manafactures keep using inventory, our new "birds" just may have an older refrigerator in them. Looks like Dometic is going to try to drag their feet on this, as they gave the NHTSA no date when the problem will be solved. NHTSA says " they will find a sollution to the problem and provide a date for corrective action". At least someone is looking out for "us ". Hope this helps. John

My fridge is one of those on the list! I also made the call & left my mailing address via voice mail (I'm in Canada and the phone questionnaire doesn't seem to recognize that Canadians are also affected, ie. not recognizing our postal code).

I'm very concerned & disappointment that Dometic does appear to have a 'sense of urgency' to provide a solution to what appears to by a serious & dangerous situation.

Any suggestions on how we can get a quicker solution from Dometic??

Regards
Graham

Thanks for the info. Do you think those of us who have recently taken delivery, or are about to, need to be concerned? My thinking is we should probably take a copy of this list with us when we go pick up our bird, or do we trust our dealer to be on top of the situation??
