Slides in or out?

Post by Me&Margie »

OK, folks, heres another question from a soon-to-be newbie. When our new bird finally gets home, should we park it with the slides in or out. I'm thinking we are probably going to have to leave them out, at least until all of our family, friends, and neighbors have had a chance to check out our new toy. And of course, they'll have to be out when we pack her up for our first trip. I guess what I'm asking is, will it hurt to have the slides out for an extended period of time, or should I just run them in or out as needed? I have seen the supports you can get to put under the slides. Does anybody here use those??
Thanks.....Take care, Marv

Well, IMHO, slides were put there to use and newbies have a ball wowing the lookers on how it opens up to a real room! I still like to watch them. But, I store closed because it keeps everything a little better sealed against bugs, snow, moisture, etc. on the slides themselves.
Supports are completely unnecessary and I believe FR discourages them for the reason that the trailer will often settle some when parked and the supports may not settle and thus put stress on the slide.

I have to agree with Al....we leave ours out and have done so for two years now. Plus, full timers leave theirs out all the time.

We keep our slides in. In the winter we keep the trailer heated and there is less air to heat with the slides in. I also disable the living room slide with the hydraulic switch because we've found that when we need to get into the trailer it's always the bedroom area.

I don't worry about storage, since I am full timing. But my trailer does settle after awhile. That wouldn't be good with supports under the slides. May not make much difference if parked on concrete. But if FR doesn't recommend it, I would have to think the structure is strong enough without support. I don't use them.

We leave the slides in while stored and like stated above take pleasure on showing friends and family how they extend to make more room. In my opinion the slide supports are not needed and could cause problems if the trailer settles. Don't waste your money on them. Enjoy.

Forgot to address the slide supports issue. I asked the dealer about using those under the slides and They stated as others here have...DO NOT USE THEM. He said as the rig settled that it would damage the tracks or mechanism that they roll out on.

Ours is in storage when not in use slides in. I was surprised on this trip how big it looked once we opened the slides. I think it has been too long since the last trip!!lol

Slides in or out.

If we are going in and out we leave ours out but in winter when we don't use it we slide them in. I read somewhere it seals better and the weight of the snow can be heavy. They can withstand the weight but I don't see a reason to put it on them if it isn't necessary. I would leave it out for a while and once the new is begun to wear off you could slide them in. That's not to say you won't go out and slide them back out....got ours last Jan. believe me we spent many hours out there just sitting in it!!!

In or Out?

We're lucky enough to have a large cement driveway, so we always leave the slides out during the camping season when parked there. It makes it easier to clean, and we often "let" family stay there when they're visiting for a day or two.

This arraignment works great; because the trailer is right next to a busy street and it's just too noisy to stay for more than one or two nights. If they do stay longer, they're not underfoot and don't interfere with my routines!)

As far as supports go, it makes sense what the others have said about settling, so I just learned something new. Personally, I've never used them because I'm just too lazy to worry about setting something else up!!

I don't extend my slide outs unless I need to do some inside work. I leave them in so I have less to wash!

By the way. My wife's sister came to visit us from out of state and she just loved spending the nights in her own private motel on wheels.

My daughter and her family spent the whole week with us during Thanksgiving and they loved staying in the trailer. The grandkids loved it too!

Hi Marv, we had a 2004 33TS and "live" in it 4 months every summer. When home we usually have the slides out unless we are going somewhere and not using the Redbird. We think this just helps keep it sealed tighter. But we do leave the slides out when parked in our yard.

Supports we were told are a No No. There is always some movement in a 5er and the supports keep this from happening. We have also been in 3 slight tremors out west and don't know what would have happened if we had them. We also decided we had enough "stuff" to set up and carry that we did not want anything but what we needed.

We do use a king pin stablelizer and feels this really helps cut down the motion as does the wheel chocks that lock the wheels.

Enjoy your new bird, we are selling ours  and getting out of the RV world, getting to old to climb up on the roof. Hope we can find someone who will love our bird like we have. Tom & Linda
