New truck tires

Post by trumpman »

Hello Cardinal owners, my 2007 Ford F-350 DRW's tires are 7 years old, have plenty of tread but are showing lots of cracks. Am looking to replace. Would appreciate any suggestions and opinions regarding replacement. My trailer is pretty heavy, so I'm wondering if all-season tires should be fine or should I stick with AT. Truck is not an everyday vehicle but want nice ride when not towing as well.

I would consider what the majority use of the truck is, and put tires on it appropriately. If you travel off road or in snowy, slushy, sandy, muddy conditions then all terrain tires are best. If your use is highway driving then all-season tires are best. I have tried many truck tires over the years and always return to Michelin all-season tires. I am in Southern California, not snow country. They perform best for me, and hold up best. Other brands start out similarly, but for durability and performance my money is on Michelin. Make sure your tires are at least E rated tires to meet your F-350’s requirements for loads. If you have not done so, it is a good idea to weigh your rig to know the true weights you actually travel with. P.S.- I don’t care for the extra tread noise A/T tires bring on highways.

I agree with Dana, I only use Michelin XPS tires. I too live in so. Cal. Pricey, but the best.

When I bought my used 2006 Dodge 3500 dually from the local GMC dealer it had 38,000 miles and they replaced the original tires with Hankook. I have 182,000 miles on the pick up now and have had 2 sets of General tires and just purchased my second set of Hankook tires in June of 2017.

Strange thing happened to me when I replaced my front tires. I had replaced my rear tires a few months before at a local dealer with Michelin tires. When I went to Costco to replace the front tires, I was told that Michelin will not allow them to change any tires on a dually unless they change all six. He actually show me their policy in writing. Other places were willing to do it but were unable to get the tires from Michelin, so I went with Goodyear on the front. Anyone else have this problem with Costco?

I had a friend go through that. He went home and took the tires off at home took them back to Costco and they changed them out.
The strange thing is the same tires were available at another tire dealership about 2 miles away for only about $12 per tire more he was just hard headed enough that Costco was going to change those tires!!

I am due for a set of tires on my Ford F-350 dually. Been studying the situation for some time now. I currently have the origional tires that came with the truck, which are BF GOODRICH. They are a little more aggressive than a all season tire. I have slightly over 50,000 miles, in my opinion that is not bad. If I would not travel so much I would probably stretch another 5000 or so out of them. My mind is about made up to get BF GOODRICH AT Ko2 all terrain tires to replace. They have the same thread form as what I have now, only thicker and more aggressive. I have been asking people that I see with them if they like them and all reviews are good. Having a dually, you tend to rub on curbs occasionally. According to what I see on u tube, the side walls on the ko2’s are very tuff and does not seem to get cut. I ran across one guy who is on his 2nd set. He said he got nearly 60,000 miles on first set. I asked if they where loud as they wore down and he said no...I will have a new set of tires before national rally.

Decided to go with Michelins, had Costco install them this morning. So far they seem to absorb bumps a little better than the BFG Rugged Trails. Will have to drive them much more to really tell. All together for 6 tires ran about $1404 with install.

What are anybodys thoughts regarding tire inflation? Should the rear tires be run at max sidewall psi when towing the 3850? Costco only inflates them to what the door sticker says which is 60 lbs. The tires are rated to 80.

A rib tire has much less rolling resistance then an open block style ( mud snow) they will also run cooler and be less prone to wear . Mostly they will save you fuel up to 2 or more due to less rolling resistance. It really does make a difference when you extrapolate even a 1 mpg saving over 30 to 50 thousand miles . If you live where you need M+S by all means get them , if not then save some money. A deep block pattern does not always equate to longer life that is entirely dependent on the rubber compound used in construction.

My tires display 80 psi. My '18 F-350 door sticker says 80 psi for rear and 60 psi for front. This is the first truck where I have seen this difference on the label. I would definitely run 80 psi in rear tires while towing your 3850. You have a heavy hitch weight. Underinflated tires build up excess friction and heat leading to premature failure. I drop the pressures to 65-70 psi when not towing. I watch for even tread wear.

Thanks for the info. My '07 F350 DRW door sticker calls for 75 front and 60 in the rear. I can see where 80 in the back would give me a little more towing support. That's what I was wondering if I should do.

If you have E rated tires marked for 80psi you should run the rear at 80 for towing. 60 psi is not sufficient. If you have 65 psi marked tires run them at 65, not 80.

I see you have an ‘07 F-350, so should have E rated tires. I just looked at the door tag on my ‘08 F-350. It calls for 60 psi front, and 80 psi rear. Just like my ‘18. I learned something today.
