Cummins Fined $1.68B for falsifying emissions

Post by watkinsk »

The EPA just gave Cummins the largest fine ever for falsifying emissions tests and records. Listening to a couple of Ram truck bloggers, this is really a mess because it is unclear what Ram Trucks’ liability as EPA only went after Cummins and further EPA limited the fine to non-commercial (I.e, no Semi trucks). Cummins engines affected are 2013 to 2023, 2500 & 3500 models
The bloggers predict there are only 2 viable options for Ram: 1)Cummins will issue an emissions fix (but will that neuter the trucks?) or 2) Ram buys the trucks back. They also discussed the possibility of current owners being unable to trade their trucks in, but rather will have to wait for a buy-back program, which in turn places upward price pressure on Ford and GM vehicles.
What a mess.

Some articles say they (RAM) have three years to correct affected vehicles. Most indicate it is a software change, which may “de-tune” the trucks. Other articles say it may involve damaged parts that need replacing. Some hint at a buy back, others claim it is software. It could involve 600,000 trucks. The judgment also extends the warranty on affected parts. Lots of skepticism around this one. The law firm involved said, “watch your mail box for the letter from RAM.” Basically a “wait and see” approach. I say, “Drive it and enjoy it as long as you can.”

What is strange is EPA went after Cummins but not Ram??
I would not be buying a Cummins in the near term and I really like the Cummins engine (just not the Ram trannies!).

It is not a big fix. I am on Ram Cummins forums. Some have already had it done and only experienced a slight increase in the DEF use not power. As far as they're Tranny's. The Asian is rock solid. My sons 14 has a 68 RFE with about 120k no issues. There was a problem with a snap ring on the AISIN tranny in 2022 a metallurgy problem, not made to specs . Which has been remedied. My 2020 never an issue.

This is good news. Too many people have Cummins engines. My first diesel was a 2004.5 Dodge. Cummins 5.9L. That thing was a beast but boy did it belch smoke.

Update on Cummins Recall. Trucks that are 2019 + are not being recalled.(yet?) Trucks that are 2013 up to build date Oct 1, 2019 are being recalled but it sounds like a software fix but that is still uncertain. This Youtube explains it all in 10 minutes with the ridiculous use of the fine proceeds and Cummins Liability. Good news overall for Ram truck owners.
