Hitch Mounted Mud Flaps

Post by Traveler II »

Are these worth using? When we head south or west in the winter we have about a week driving on winter roads. The road grim is pitting the front of our Bird and I'm looking for a way to reduce this damage.

Seems like a good idea but, they sure are proud of them. Do you have standard mudflaps behind the wheels?

Hi Jim and Jane, don't know if they are worth it or not, got a kit at CW for $80.00 Went together pretty good, but didn't like some of the bolts, so I kind of upgraded it. Also mounted on spare hitch I have, so all I have to do is slide it in, and put the pin in, and off I go. Would like to go to Alaska, one of these days, and got it for that reason. Have used it for a short run, but weather was great, so don't know if help, maybe kept the road tar off the front of the bird. It is made out of strips of hard plastic, wrather then the fuzzy stuff you usually see on MH. Only open space its the area around the hitch, approx 2 inches. Hope this helps. John

A friend of mine we use to travel with had the hitch mud flaps and they did seem to work real good.

I have had a set for quite a while and they work very well at keeping the rocks and grime off the front of the bird. The fine spray mist seems to get anywhere it wants no matter what you do. The company was good to work with when I changed trucks and had to buy new flaps because of being taller. The key is to have them about 2" off the ground when loaded for travel.

If your exhaust pipe points straight out the back you probably won't want to use them because the heat may melt the rubber, especially if you have a DPF system.

I highly recommend any kind of mud flaps, from personal experince , when we went to Alaska the first gravel and muddy road we went across, gravel and mud came up and covered the front of the trailer and knocked out the landing gear switch and broke the lamp cover. Right after that went and bought mud flaps and did not have a problem after that. :thumbrt:

I got a set at Cabela's last winter and have been leaving them on even though I'm not towing during the winter. They seem to keep down the splash on the trailer when we pull it, but like Torben said they don't stop the fine mist. since I'm pulling a TT they do make the hitch heavier and harder to handle when you take it out of the receiver. All in all I like what they do for now.
