info 05 dodge 3500 drw 6 speed

Post by joem »

I have a 2005 dodge 3500 drw with 6 spd manual. It has the G56 trans. Yesterday I had to replace the flywheel. The center section was broken which caused vibration. ( acted like the engine had bad injectors). The transmission people thought the clutch was warped. After removing the clutch assy to replace they found that the clutch and pressure plate were only 50 % worn and in good shape. The flywheel cost approx $900.00. While apart replaced everything. Cost just under $2500.00. No one had ever heard of this and I was lucky to find one. I have 141000 miles on the truck.

Joem,

Just wondering how long did you notice the vibration? Did it gradually get worse as the crack progressed or did the vibration appear all of the sudden.

Since we both have basically the same rig I was just wondering.

Thanks
Paul

First noticed it very light and appeared to be either the universals or the carrier bearing. replaced them with no change. the vibration kept getting worst and acted like a warped clutch or pressure plate. but when i tried the old method with the brakes on and engine rpm at 1500 and releasing the clutch the engine would stall. The only thing that suggested the problem was in the clutch was the throw out bearing was noisy. drove the beast for 2500 miles with a 1000 towing and finally started having problems when shifting. So I bite the bullet and had the clutch removed to be inspected. Then the fun began and my money flew. I talked with a few other people with standards and higher mileage and they never heard of a flywheel failure like mine. one mechanic said he has seen warped flywheels but not on the 3500 with G56. mostly kids racing. hopefully i will be the only one.

It is a known issue towing heavy with the that duel mass fly wheels or in performance applications. You just happen to be in the higher milage club. Since you have spent the coin already no sense in messing with it again but if something happens with the clutch down the road, you might look at aftermarket clutchs. Southbend makes a good one as well a Valair. They come with new non duel mass fly wheel and better clutch than factory for about the cost of the fly wheel.
