Tranny Temps
Really looking for the dodge guys with the 48re trans.
any one have a tranny temp gauge?
how High does it get?
and where is the sender located?
I think I have a temp issue with my 04.5 running down the road with the converter locked it is fine, but as soon as i get into any town driving the temp goes up fast and it will go to 220 and start shifting hard.
I dont think it should do this and was wondering what temps you guys see towing in stop ans go trafic.
Thanks Dave

I just installed one but have not pulled the 5er yet. I have pulled an equipment trailer, about #5000, however with it on. Running empty the temp stays about 120-130 no matter what. With the trailer on about 130 no matter what. The worst time will be in slow or no speed condition as there is little air flow thru the cooler.
The sensor is mounted on the return line of the cooler. I cheated and had my dealer install the sender while on the rack doing an oil change.

Well if you are seeing temps at 220 you better start doing some upgrades. The warning light will come on sometime after 250 but buy then its to late. These trannys are designed to run around 180 degrees.

On my 98.5 ram I hit 230 and toasted the seals in the tranny. Took out my torque converter, we were on our way to May Madness (Diesel truck event in Reno) I had to drive 400 miles either full throttle or no throttle while towing the 5er.
That one cost me 2k to get home
As Rob stated if you hit 220 better change the fluid

well I pulled the tranny cooler lines off and blew out the coolers I will be towing this weekend I'll see if it helps, i figure maybe there was some junk in there I got some out but not alot. In hine sight i blew through in the direction the fluid flows I should have done it backwards.
time will tell It has a new converter in it I put in a 1400 stall But it had this temp problem before the new converter.

The tranny temps are much better I did still get to 210 in stop and go trafic but that is better then 220 and it runs around 180 most of the time now when towing. so I guess the coolers had some blockage in them But nothing really came out I ran what came out through a coffee filter and it looked good.

Around 150-160 no tow and it will run in the 160-180 range when towing unless i do some stop and go and pull some hills in 2nd with the converter unlocked.
I do agree it seems high yet but at least it is not going into the high temp mode and slaming gears.
I maybe should install another cooler. I just dont know why i would have to if i have the same set up and im the only one running hot it allmost seems like the hardware is ok it is somthing else causing it.
any ideas?

Dave, 150-160 seems perfectly normal to me for towing. Of course in stop and go traffic you don't have the air volume through the cooler as you do when traveling down the highway. It seems like I've see tranny coolers with fans that are thermostatically controlled. Might be something to think about.

funny you said this cause that was my question of the day to you guys.Shields wrote:Just curious, but what does your enging temp run at?
I drove the truck last night to go take my ASE cert. test (couldnt pull in driving a Kia to take the diesel test LOL) and i was keeping an eye on the engine temp and the tranny temp. It was 77* outside, the tranny was at 177* this was with driving around town. I was towing nothing. The engine temp was right on 200* dead center stright up.
I was told tranny temps were normal if they run around 100* over outside air temp.
Is this where your engine runs at 200* or is that High also?

Thats running high even though the gauge shows its normal. You should be running at 180 empty, I dont see 200 or over unless I am towing a hill then it may go to 220 until the fan kicks in.
