Changing Transmission Fliud

Post by LuvRving »

Hi Folks!

Well, it's time to get ready for summer camping. The manual for my 2012 GMC 3500 diesel says to change the transmission fluid at 72000 km. I now have 71000 km on the truck so I have an appointment next week to get the trans fluid changed, the transfer case fluid changed (it was changed at 36000 km as recommended), the oil and filters changed and a lube job. I will have a brake inspection done when they change out my winter wheels later in about 3 weeks.

I was doing some reading and there seems to be some debate concerning the trans fluid as to whether it's a "flush" or just a change. The GM dealership is doing it so I guess they will do the right thing. Any comments on that?

Also, the truck is 4 years old and working just fine. Any other preventative maintenance items I should be considering? A coolant flush is recommended at 5 years so I will get that done in the fall; the truck will be 5 years old next February. BTW, I had the truck in for a slight coolant leak about a month ago. The service guy said that since my truck was bought on a leap year, Feb. 29 four years ago, the records show I have about 12 years of warranty left! I wish!!!!

Thanks!
Joe

I have heard from several Mechanic friends that you should NOT flush the transmission but just change it. They say the flushed transmissions do not last as long as just changed. I asked for some study of proof and all the response was " Thats been my experience" Now these are good guys and have been in the industry for 20 to 30 years.
