4WD or 2WD vehicle???

Post by watkinsk »

Curious as to whether most people who tow own a truck with 4WD or 2WD? I currently have a F-350 4WD and caught myself looking at a new truck today. It was 4WD but the salesman was recommending 2WD for towing big rigs because of increased capacity. Doesn’t make sense but there are wiser people than me in this world!

For me I choose 4X4 because there have been several times over the years that I have used it to get out of a muddy campsite :thumbrt: and a couple of times in mountain area campsites that were gravel roads on a hill, pulling and backing. If I only need it once it would be worth and I understand resale is better.

I have a 2 wheel drive. I have no need for 4x4 or the expense and maintenance involved. As far as payload, the salesman was correct. A 4X4 has a 500 or 600 lbs. less payload rating because the weight of transfer case and front axle makes the truck that much heavier. Consequently they reduce the payload rating. I had to special order my 2X4 because all the local dealers only floor 4X4. Lots of snow and muck here in Sunny So. Cal. :)

I have 4x4, but that mostly because I live in Michigan, and the winters can get pretty bad. I wouldn't buy 4x4 just to tow with, although I have used 4lo before to more easily back up onto blocks. That is easier on the transmission.

I have a 4x4 and love it. Icy or slippery wet roads are not a problem. I think it is an excellent choice and resale is better when you have it. Do you tow anything else?

Good luck

Rick, I only tow my Cardinal and rarely a small utility trailer. Now that we live in North Carolina (instead of Colorado) where it snows 2 inches twice per winter, the argument that I need 4x4 for is out the window. I have used The 4 high to maneuver in a camping space. Biggest thing going forward is that I love the diesel and it’s power/economy when towing.

I share your love of the duramax. But there is always one time you will need it and dont have it. Next what is the difference in MPG? online it look minor and I was thinking why would the saleman steer you away from a specific truck? Resale is always big to me and what accessories do you loose if you went with what the sales guys wants you to do? I am skeptical of his motives
Just sayin :d :d :d

Mike, That is true about most things. That is why our trailers are so heavy. LOL.
I have been stuck before, on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, in sand sunk to the axle  . It was not fun. Oh yes, the trailer was hitched up when I did it. Cindy wouldn't push it either.

Mine is 4X4 partly because we live in Michigan and partly because the big diesels have so much torque that it is real easy to spin the tires on start up. I think I engage 4 wheel almost as often in the summer as I have to make a left turn on to a busy highway and every time it is wet I put it in 4 as I approach the intersection so that I can get going in a hurry.
