CAT-Back Exhaust

Post by campswithcritters »

Just had a CAT-Back 4 inch system put on my dually and had to praise the guys that did it at Pinnacle Power Exhaust in Dubois WY. Very reasonable price and it sounds nice (deep and throaty V-8 sound), and most important dropped my EGTs 100+ deg. Check these guys out if you are considering an aftermarket exhaust. This system installed was more than $100 cheaper than my previous Banks system and included installation, I installed the Banks myself.

Yeah I'm still out here and dangerously close to you fellas, Arco Idaho goofing off with a week to go before work. The exhaust is excellent, almost no increase in sound and absolutely no drone. EGTs are definitely at least 100 deg cooler and throttle response/low end power improved. I am very happy with the system.

I am admitting to a little ignorance here. (Much more to admit when it is time)
Just what is a Cat back system? a muffler on steroids?

It is a free-flowing exhaust system that attaches from the Catalytic Converter back. It leaves all the emmisions equipment alone so will not void warranty, and for those of us with annual vehicle inspections all the equipment required is still there. Also no environmental impact. It usually is made of larger diameter pipe and has a straight through muffler instead of the large restrictive factory muffler. Basically it lets the engine pass more air, hence improved power and economy while keeping turbo temperatures lower.

so those of us with pre-2007 diesels can just go from the turbo back?
And if I were to buy (don't tell the better half or she will become the bitter half) a new 2007 can it be ordered with such a muffler, or is it purely aftermarket?

Thanks much for the explanation.

Al I believe with an 03 you have no catalytic converter so you can go with a turbo back system which is even better. These systems are not available from the factory, however I think some manufacturers now offer a system that is dealer installed.
