DEF Supply Shortage

Post by Don Wilson »

I have been hearing for a while that there was a possible shortage of Diesel Exhaust Fluid for diesel vehicles and this article in the electronic version of Camper Report" linked below gives more details about the issue. The article does state there most likely will not be an problem in the U.S. other than it costing more to fill our DEF tanks. While on my recent trip to and from Louisiana in early May I did pay $4.19 a gallon in both Schulenburg TX and Winslow AZ but before starting the trip in mid April I paid $3.99 a gallon when I filled up in Ripon CA.

I stopped at Walmart in Fredericksburg, TX, specifically for Blue DEF. They had none. They had 10 containers of the Platinum variety for $23 and change. Normal stuff was $13 and change. (I bought one platinum container). The clerk said he read that producers were ordered to hold back 50% of normal private consumer supply to assure commercial truckers could keep rolling. No sure how accurate that info is. Later I found it at Chevron in Buckeye, AZ at the pump for $3.87/gal. I topped off. Go figure per Don’s article, most Urea comes out of Russia and China. They have us again.
