I just had to replace the Def tank, pump and heater in my F350 because (I think) I topped off my DEF tank with about 1/2 gallon of DEF that was a year old. The technician believes the old DEF crystallized and froze the DEF pump, increasing pressure within the DEF tank and resulting in the tank rupturing. The heater was changed out also along with a couple sensors.
Not a cheap endeavor plus I was left stranded in Charlestown WV for a week. Could have been worse…if the DPF filter had been clogged by the crystallization, the bill would have been about $7-10,000 extra to repair the exhaust system (including replacing the SCR filter)
Beware adding older DEF. I also learned that Amazon sells DEF testers for those who buy it in containers vs from truck stop pumps.

Here is the decoder key for the Product Code stamped on the boxes of packaged PEAK Blue DEF. The research shows it lasts about one year on the shelf.

Re: Bad DEF = $$$
Thanks for the code. The DEF I added was not BLUE and I can't locate dates on the container. The Ford repairman recommended not using when more than 6 months old and once the container is opened, pitch any that is left because it is exposed to air possibly expediting the crystalization.

Re: Bad DEF = $$$
I do not allow my DEF reservoir to get below 1/4 full. My truck has a dash gauge similar to the fuel gauge. I got low once and it triggered a dash indicator and set a code. The emitter/injector into the diesel exhaust filter in the exhaust system was at risk of clogging with crystalized fluid from low fluid flow and heat. I filled the reservoir and I averted a real problem. I watch the box production codes and I don’t store much. It is good info not to store partial containers of DEF.

Another reason that I re-skinned my truck rather than buy new, No DEF.

My friend Jack Wear is the head Mechanic for all of west coast Boeing. He has done a great deal of research and his companies experience has led to the following guidelines for shortrange and long range Boeing trucks
1. Keep the DEF in the tank clean. Meaning always close the fill cap tight and secure.
2. Preform the manufacturers maintenance as required
3. Never turn off the engine in the middle of a regeneration cycle
4. Do not add anything to DEF . Don't try to thin it out as the vehicles of today have sensors which will create alerts .
5. Check expiration dates on the DEF you buy. Don't use anything over 9 months old.
6. Fill the tank as often as you wish. Daily, weekly or monthly dependent on use.
7. DO NOT ADD Def to you diesel fuel. It is toxic to injectors, fuel lines and you entire fuel system.
8. Clean the surface if you spill DEF because of item number 7.
Currently a EPA has granted the ability to over ride the system and has lawsuits pending

Re: Bad DEF = $$$
They just can't put a date on that is easy to understand they resort to a complicated dating system to confuse the buyer so they just buy it ! Cosco sells Blue Def at a reasonable price . I have used Wal Mart , Autozone and Napa . Def is manufactured in a couple of places and the only difference is the name on the box . The rest is marketing hype and cost . Buy a def tester and put your mind at ease.
