2019 Chevy 3500 diesel. High Country

Post by Big Bird »

One of our sons has the above trucks.

He took the truck in the shop as he was experiencing a loss of power. Shop says he has one of the newer high pressure fuel pumps and the new diesel fuel does not have the same lubricant ability. He needs to replace the fuel pump. Son has found class action lawsuits against GM, but not one taking new members in the class. The repair is $19,000, yes that is the number. Anyone have/had or know of the problem and have any suggestions. New truck today $115,000.

Marv, I haven’t heard of this problem. I did a quick Google and found this article on fuel pump filter failures in 2016 due to lack of lubricity. Maybe it can point your soon to a soln. Regardless…not a cheap fix. A company called Injectors Direct advertises a soln.

There also is a recall for a small number of 2019 Duramax with fuel pump issues: #N222368030

That is the one.

Our son is replacing high pressure fuel pump as the new fuel mix will not lubricate filter.

Have them replace the fuel filter first if they haven't already!!. That is one cause of loss of power. Fuel filter looses seal and cant function. Secondly he is still in e 5year warranty unless he is over 100K miles? Contact GM direct for better customer relations

Rick is right. Diesels have a 100,000 mile, (some may be 80,000 mile) Federal emissions systems warranty. My ‘08 Ford had 100K miles. My ‘18 they claim has 80K miles of drivetrain, emissions related stuff. Fuel systems are certainly “emissions” components. Have your son lean on them over that. Worth some research.

Some diesel owners have had fuel pump repairs/replacements covered by their auto insurance due to contaminated fuel causing the problems. It may require the fuel to be tested by the dealer.

That dealer is full of it ! I beg to differ but fuel delivery and what is produced by combustion and the end result are 2 different things and you cannot tie a fuel pump into part of the emission system. The fuel has lubricant added prior to being put into the fuel stations. Diesel is single source unlike gas the same diesel is taken to many different brand name in the same area. That is a pump problem not a fuel problem. Ram had the problem with their Bosh pumps CP4. in 19 and 20 models. They had a bunch going south and had to replace mine and a bunch of others due to the problem. GM had dumped that pump but still put some on their trucks a CP4. Ford put them in also He needs to go after them for a new pump and labor. That cost seems to indicate they need to replace the whole fuel system. If he still has the filters tell him to cut them open and look for metal shavings. Good Luck .Keep us apprised of the outcome.
