UPDATE ON DODGE 6.7- -3500 HD-- 8500 MILE TRIP

Post by Jim&Peggy »

Tuesday 7-17 we completed our 7 week 8500 mile trip. This trip took us from AZ to Bishop,CA to Palmdale,CA to Vancouver,WA{Family and Mt. St. Helens}to Twin Falls ID{friends} to Jackson Hole,WY.{ Grand Tetons and Yellowstone) back to Vancouver then to Bishop then home. Altitude on the trip was from 200 feet to 10,000 feet. We averaged 10.9 mpg for the entire trip. This doesn't sound all that good but,to us, after driving our '94 F-250 that got 12mpg when not towing and 7/8 mpg when towing-- this looked good to us. Jim,

We have just pulled our trailer from California to Albuquerque New Mexico 1000 miles on the first leg of a 3,000 mile trip with our 2006 5.9 Liter CTD and averaged 10.5 mpg traveling at 60 to 63 miles per hour. This is the first long trip with the pickup. The milage is about the same as the 2000 CTD but the 06 had power whenever I needed it unlike the 2000.

Thanks for the report Jim&Peggy. We are still dreaming of the time when we can take 7 week trips. But in the mean time it's off to work we go with long weekend trips here and there.

I tend to believe what you are getting for mileage is about right. From all I've read the days of 12-14 mpg with a diesel are long gone with these new diesel breeds and regulations.

New Truck Follow up!

Post by Jim&Peggy »

Over Thanksgiving we made a 225 mile round trip to the Grand Canyon For dinner at the El Tovar Hotel and averaged 17.05 MPG while averaging 70 MPH. This was without the trailer and much better than my old Ford F250 at 12 MPG. We are very satisfied with the truck, Peggy loves the sattelite radio and the general comfort of the interior. Our dogs are happy in the rear seat with the platform and 6" foam mattress that allows them to stretch out and nap. Altogether so far so good!! 12,315 miles on truck to date. Regards--------JIm

Hey Jim, 11mpg towing and 17mpg empty on the highway sounds pretty good for these new diesels. Who knows, with more break-in miles it may even improve a bit.

Its not broke in yet I get 11 to 13 mpg towing with my 04.5 and at 70 mph I will get around 18 mpg. If I keep it under 65 I can get as high as 23 mpg not towing of coarse. So its good to see the numbers you are getting so far.
