Yeah, 55 mph can be dangerous on today's freeway's. Cars come up on me awfully fast! But, if the freeway is fairly empty, I too like to cruz slower & feast on the flowers!

Guess there isn't too much consensus on my post. Around here, if I'm in OD at 61, the tranny shifts down and up too often cuz our roads are pretty much not flat.

Mark,

I pull my trailer in Tow/Haul on the freeway and have not had any shifting issues traveling at 55 mph. That being said I usually travel about 61 to 63 mph as I get better mileage at that speed. There could be some difference in the shifting patterns between your Ford and my Dodge?

I am usually the slowest thing on the road at that speed!

With my '02 Duramax I tow in tow/haul mode and usually around 60-65 mph on the freeway systems. My best mileage seems to be in that range when you average driving conditions day in and day out. On state highway/byways we travel under 60 mph and the mileage does seem to improve at the lower speed but not by very much. I have traveled across I10 and I15 in Calif several times in the last couple of years and most RVers are at the 55mph. I also have noticed that the majority of trucks also are close to the 55-60 mph range on the last couple of trips so they may be trying to max out the mph as well.

check the pick torque r.p.m in your engine and check speed. in my 6.0 power stroke is 1900.r.p.m=64 mph --11.5 m.p.g

Kind of depends on your terrain I guess. IL speed is 55 and won't go into OD. I usually run 62 whether in OD or not. With the 3100 I got 12.5 +/- & with the 3150 I get 11. Maybe.

Drove to colorado and back about 2,200 miles, I averaged 9.9 mpg driving 60-70 mph. tried to keep rpms about 2100 - 2400 range.

The first part of my Yellowstone trip (MI, IN and IL) I kept the speed around 64 and so far I'm getting 10.1 mpg. Today will be the first long pull (412 miles). We'll see how it goes.

I guess I should feel blessed!

Drove to Long Beach WA, on the WA side of the Columbia River, speed limit 55 and got 15.4 mpg towing. Driving on the freeway, not towing, 70 mph I got 16 mpg. I know the towing mpg will go down once I tow on the freeway this Oct. going south, but the joy of traveling now that I am retired makes it all worth the added mpg!

My PSD has 4:88 gears. So my truck stays in O/D in tow/haul mode unless I'm heading up long hills. Now that I am out of warranty, I have done some small mods and this trip to NC got 11.2 MPG towing at 65 MPH. Better than the 9.5 I used to get. And, no, I did not install a tuner or chip.

Yup, did the EGR delete kit but still ALL stock filters. What I did do was replace the return fuel pressure regulator with an updated one from Ford. It was found to be one of the major causes for failed fuel injectors. Also installed a coolant filtration system...still no tuner or chip either!
