Questions for 6.7L Dodge owners.

Post by bop11 »

New Dodge owners,
Now that you have had the new Cummins and 6 speed transmission for a while I was wondering how you liked it? Is the transmission working better than the old 4 speed? How's the milege compare with the 5.9 Litre?
The lease on my 04 CTD is up in a few months and I dont know if I'm going to keep what I have, get a new Dodge, or switch brands completely.

Ernie and others can answer the new Dodge question, after owning 5 of them and now a new Chevy I can tell you why I changed brands. I did not think I would like an auto but the Allison is great. Cant speak for the new Dodge trannies but since I had to go to an auto I felt the Allison was the best don't know about the rest of the truck yet.

One thing you will find with the new trucks all brands is fuel mileage is a little less in my case towing mpg is better then my 04 Dodge but in town is now about 1 mpg less. You will have to start putting up with regen cycles where your exhaust turns into a self cleaning oven and gets to around 1200 degrees while doing it. We were in a regen the other day while take the 5er back to the storage lot, Susanna went to put the block out for the landing gear and jumped back and asked if the truck was on fire lol. While in regen which other then smell you wont know it unless your watching your average mpg and it drops like a rock for about 20 min.

I think both GM and Dodge are good trucks it was just time for a change and so far I am amazed. We will see after I get back from the National Rally that will be a 2800 mile tow if I still feel the same way :D

When we first bought ours we had problems and the feul mileage was about 12 miles to the gallon around town. But the got the bugs worked out. We are getting about 16-17 around town and about 20 on the highway. I check it on the last trip to the lake about 150 miles round trip got 12.3 pulling the trailer.
I don't know about the Chevy but the new cummings you are not lacking power put it in six gear and go.

Hi guys, this is off the subject just a little, but my brother who works at a Dodge dealer, says Dodge just lowered their prices 40% on trucks only. Might be a good time to check them out. Happy camping. John

Mine is getting about the same mileage as yours except the hwy is 19.5 but close enough not bad for being auto impaired now. As far as power alls I have to compare it to is my 04.5 Dodge 6 speed and this one has more power but in a very different way Chevy seems to have more mid range power. It was hard for me to leave Dodge after 5 trucks over the last 14 years they are great trucks.

Comparing with my old '05 5.9, I like the pulling with the '08 6.7. It pulled my Bird fine, but the mileage is down from the '05.
I just have 2500 miles, and I know it will get better as it breaks in, but all I got was 8.5 MPG with a moderate head wind. The '05 would get 10 - 11.5 consistently on the same trip.

From Fredericksburg, I seem to get a little improvement, a pretty good head wind too. Another mile or 2 on the truck, another 0.1 on the MPG.
I think it will get to what I hoped it would. Phoowie, I hope so...

I have a 6.7 2008 4x4 Dodge. It has alittle over 10k miles on it. On my last trip towing the fifth wheel I got 12.3 mpg. When it had under 10k miles on it , I was getting 10.8 mpg.
Last weekend I drove to the beach with out the fifth wheel, it was around a 200 miles round trip. On I-5 with the cruise on 60, I was getting 23 mpg. Off I-5 up and down hills 20mpg.
A few months ago I was only getting 17mpg driving solo. So it looks like around 10k they get broke in.
I have noticed with Oregon Diesel I get 1 mpg less than Washington.

Hope your hand calcing it and not going by your overhead on the dodge but that is what my 04 Dodge was getting so you should not be far off. Winter blend will start coming back in pretty soon and you will see a slight drop in those numbers.

Winter Blend? What's that? Just kiddin, but have never had the opportunity (or necessity) to find out if it effects mileage on any of my trucks. :joke:

I have a 2008 2500 heavy duty with the 6.7 and the six-speed and I love it. What a combo!! I pull a 30RKLE Cardinal 5ver over the smokies with no problem except having to hold it back cause it wants to goooo! Mileage around 11 to 12 towing but should do better when I get the first oil change. :D

Welcome to the club bigdaddy 1!!
I pulled the trigger today and bought an 08 Chevy 2500 with the Duramax-Allison combo.
Unfortunatley we probably won't get to tow with it until next spring.

Congratulations on your new truck Bill. May I ask why you chose the 2500 over the 3500?

Rob,
Mostly, because I couldn't beat the deal! :D
Also, my Dodge 2500 handled our camper with no problems. We are real happy with the 30 TS and don't have any thoughts of going any bigger.
