Emission Controls for 2010 Diesel Engines

Post by Chief409 »

I'm glad I didn't wait to get a diesel. Read this: http://www.rvtechtips.com/

I hesitated buying a diesel in 2005 because I remember the tribulations of going from leaded to unleaded gas, and knew that Ultra Low Sulfur fuel was coming. And then I waited a year after ULSF came out, checking on reliability of the new diesels. I almost missed this about the NEW requirements.

And Smog Inspection Stations in CA are NOT your friend! I had to replace the carburetor on my Bronco, so I got one from NAPA. Right model, wrong part number, it wasn't on the list for the Bronco. FAILED Visual Inspection - and I'm out $800 for another carb, if I can find one.

Glad I bought mine when I did. Had better last a looooooong time! The bad news is the Federal Government is considering adopting California’s rules on emissions.
Wonder if I can pull my bird with an electric truck?

Why did you not just have the original carb for the bronco rebuilt??

Now as far as diesel emissions go, you guys will know what it is like to have the life choked out of ya like us gas guys 8-} 8-} 8-} but it still stinks

wow, I just read the link in the first post, Sounds like alot of experimenting like when they tried to first get crazy with gassers. Sound like the next few generations may be interesting.

The Cummins 6.7 in the 07.5 and later Dodges already meet the 2010 requirements. It is Ford and GM that need new motors. Chris

Short version, corrosion. The gasket under the base burned thru, exhaust to the EGR valve went directly into the carb body and valve plate. Couldn't even move the valves. Between finishing the house and work, I didn't move the Bronco for 4 - 5 months, but it was sick for awhile.

I won't be going back to this shop though. One of the discrepancy's noted was no Heat Tube Riser. It was there when I dropped the Bronco off. Plus, when I picked the Bronco up this morning, the air cleaner and all the attachments were on the right side passenger floor, I had to go back in and have everything put back on. At least this was a "Pre-Smog" inspection, nothing in the states computer. I'll head to my Ford dealer after I get another HTR for another "Pre-Smog".

I was planning on keeping my current truck for a few more years, but I am concerned about the next generation diesels. I have read that the 2010 Dodge will have the current 6.7 Cummins. The 2010 production is only going to be from Sept to December. Dodge is going to start production on the 2011 in January of 2010. The 2011 will have the next generation Cummins that will require Carbamide (urea) to be refilled. I don't think I will like the idea of adding urea. Maybe Dodge will bring back the V-10 gasser :ymsick:

I just gotta throw in here that "Diesel Exhaust Fluid" sounds like a bad practical joke. In aviation we always sent the new guys to get a yard of flight line or a bucket of prop wash. After reading the ingredients though might need to add a yellow water tank to the camper and carry deionized water. :joke: Wonder what would happen if a fellow just put water in that tank, would the truck be smart enough to figure it out between smog testings?

We use to send the new guys out to measure the output of the vortex generators on the BUFFs. :D

Best one we pulled was setting a "Mail Buoy Watch" with the ships JAG as Officer of the Watch. The Skipper came on the bridge, saw the JAG and his phone talker on the bow and asked what was going on. Then the Skipper relieved the watch and requested that the JAG to report to the bridge. This was on the USS Constellation while we were on Yankee Station in the Gulf of Tonkin. =))

Reading the Chevy Owners site, it is rumored that Chevy will not be changing their engine much for 2010. Seems that the new system has caused a spike in the engine & exhaust temps (hot enough to do damage to the pistons). While some are saying it is the same system as Mercedes others are saying that they will fill the system with regular water. It is also rumored that the tank will only have to be refilled at oil changes.
Every year they put on more and more Emission Controls on in the name of global warming then they complain how much we are dependant on oil. Make up my mind. X( I'll get off my soapbox now. :D
Personaly it reminds me of the gimic system that sprayed water into the gasoline thereby giving double the gas mileage. =))
