CaptainSkidmark wrote:As much as I love my truck, the fuel milage will fall as I approach the big hills. It has not been a problem here in Louisiana as we are flat, but I do for see the fuel dropping with the hills esp with the long geared auto-transmission on this truck. I guess I will be cursing some wishing for the six speeds. lol Also with newer Goats, they come with the built in jake brake. Oh well, I guess that is why we all dream . heheheh
I also find that the wind can cut into, or improve my fuel milage, and I'm always surprised by how much. 1-3 miles per gal. :-? :-?

With the Tow Boss gearing, I learned quickly that anything over 65 mph (or 20" of boost) is going to really knock down the MPG. Which takes some of the fun away as "the Beast" will do 65 or better, all day, up hill, down hill or into the wind with the 'Bird on the hitch.

I mean, When was the last time you "Blew the Doors Off" a diesel pusher motor home or tour bus with a big 'ol 5er in tow?

That is sooo cool... B-)

Earlier today, two of them, and they had just passed me on flat area with a higher cruise (hey I'm in no hurry). They hit the hills and lost the advantage. :D :bounce: B-)

Our last RV was a MH and I found that going up a hill it would hold it's speed, but if I had to slow down it was hard to re-gain it. That's not true with our Chevy, but on the other hand it's far less weight.

Well towing here to Canyonville this weekend 98 degrees outside air going, trailer that really needs to go on a diet and lots of hills. I was surprised when I switched from tranny temp to average mph to see 11.8 mpg (for whatever reason tranny temp goes away on my insight gauge at 189 degrees then comes back at 190 #:-s ) will figure it by hand when i fill up today.

How high is to high for the tranny temp? Most of our travel is in the winter and 175 is the highest I'm seen it go on a long grade.

They say they can go to 265 for a short time but mine has never gone above 210 in fact coming over here on Thursday close to 100 outside water temp ran between 190 and 230 on the hills then the fan would kick on the tranny on this trip got to 200 on one long hill. I did figure my mileage by hand today and I got 12.7 mpg best yet with this truck may have to run with the air on all the time lol.

For you Allison transmission owners, if you are hitting 200 or higher on trans temp, you might want to switch the fluid (if not already done) to transynd. That is Allison's synthetic fluid which they claim is good for up to 275 deg and can run extended intervals at 250 deg. That might be worth the expense if you are doing a lot of high temp hill pulling. Also has an extended drain interval with Allison warranty approval.

On our trip to Mammoth Lakes, 2250' to around 7800', 225 miles one way, plus some good headwinds, the Beast showed 9.1 mpg on the panel, I came up with an even 10 mpg. We couldn't be happier. Much better then the 5 to 7 mpg with the V10 and the 'Bird. Stop in Bishop and fill up (much cheaper then the resort area called Mammoth Lake  ), cruise around all weekend, top off again in Bishop and head home. We'll be making the trip more often now. :)
