Rear Main Seal

Post by Don Wilson »

I noticed some oil spots on the drive way early last week and thought I had an oil filter leaking, after checking it out it looked to be leaking from the rear main seal. I took it to the only Dodge dealer left in the county and it was difficult going some where new after using the same small dealer I had used for the last decade. It turns out it was the rear main seal leaking as the service manager said "a big time leaker." It only has 65,000 miles on it has anyone else had problems.

The worst thing is It is going to delay our trip which was supposed to start on Monday the 6th of July but they stated the seal is a new modified seal and they can't get it in until Wednesday July 8th. The good thing is everything will be covered by warranty.

Hi Torben,

We are headed to New Mexico for Martha's family reunion and to spend time with my parents, we will be there for almost a month. This is also the first leg of our Rally run. We are going to store the trailer in either Albuquerque or Durango, Colorado from mid August and then drive back home for a month. We will then go back in early September to attend the Durango Rally before heading to Louisiana for the Southern Rally in October.

I still think you and Patty should join us :thumbrt: in Durango and then start your trek to the head waters of the Mississippi from there. Your friends could meet you in Laramie Wyoming!!!

Mike,

What is your feeling on using Synthetic oil in the Cummins engine? I have been using Mobil 1 since the first oil change after I bought the pickup in May 07 and have considered going back to Delo because the Mobil 1 has been difficult to find?

We had a rear seal go on a Jeep we had with about 70,000. The dealer was to expensive, so we had the work done by a local guy. He did a good job.

For what it's worth I use semi-synthetic.

Like Mike (not wanting to start a war), I'm with Rob. I did see an opinion once that stated full synthetic was a waste of money if you change it regularly but to each his own. That's why we have the big 3 (Ford, Dodge & Chevy). :thumbrt:

The rear main is holding with no problems so far! We have driven 1,700 miles since the repair and no leaks,1,300 miles of that has been pulling the Cardinal.

Dodge warranty took care of everything and we had 68,000 miles at the time of repair.
