GM P/U Rear End WARNING!!!

Post by rlhedlund »

I have a '07 3500HD. A co-worker has a '07 1500. Another co-worker has a GMC 1500.

I checked the rear end on mine this week and found it to be a quart low on gear oil. Co-workers decided to check theirs and theirs were over a 1/2 qt low. We all bought our trucks brand new. No leaks, no service work on rear ends. They must have come from the factory with under-filled rear ends.

I called the dealer to get the scoop on how much to fill. They said up to the fill hole. I would recommend all GM truck owners check their differential oil levels. Note - the spec is 75-90 wt SYNTHETIC. Just thought you might want to check.

This leads me to a question...Who is supposed to check the differential? The factory or the dealer?

Out of four new GM trucks, only one had a full rear differential. Four different dealers.

When you purchase a new vehicle the "Dealer Prep" charge is for checking ALL fluids, road testing, washing & detailing the vehicle. Most dealers only wash the vehicle before it is delivered. I checked mine (after reading a simular post on the Chevy owner's web site) and found it to be low. I contacted the dealer (where I purchased it) and they assured me that the dealership checked and filled it to the recommended level. I removed the fluid and found there to be 3/4 of a quart. :-o To make a long story short, the dealership ended up giving me a free oil change. Towing what we tow, I check the fluid at every oil change and change it when I change the transmission fluid.

I always check under the hood after any service, once I found a 2 foot long straight slot screwdriver on top of the radiator which I promptly returned to the Service Desk. Then I had them double check ALL the work done. This was when we lived in NoCal, at a Mega Dealership. Another NoCal Mega Dealership replaced the carburetor when the Bronco needed a new ignition module. Out big bucks for the carb, plus a week for a rental car so I could get to work. I got the module at NAPA for $50 and fixed the problem myself when I got the Bronco home. First I had to GET home over the Sunol grade in rush hour though!

Down here I deal with a small family owned Ford dealer and they take excellent care of all my vehicles.
