Foul smell in 09 Ford diesel during regen

Post by Big Bird »

Hi,

I have a 2009 Ford F250 Lariat with a 6.4 diesel. During regen and at low or stop and go speeds I get a heavy foul smell in the cab. As soon as regen finishes, the smell goes away.

Anyone have this problem and do you know the fix. So far dealer has not been any help.

my 08 chevy had a bad smell at regen but my 2011 does not but it now has an injector in the exhaust instead of dumping fuel into it like the 08

I've noticed that smell at times. Plus there is this. Under 35 mph with the newer flash of the computer the '09 trucks should have, the regen is supposed to stop due to high exhaust temperatures. My next trip to the Ford shop I'll have them re-flash mine, the other day it started a regen just as I shifted to Reverse backing into the drive way, plus going into regen under 35 mph, all within the last month or so. And I DID notice the extra OOMPH just as I shifted to Reverse. :-o

Regens are not noticed by me, and my wife complains I notice every little thing. I do catch a "burning brake" smell after stopping and getting out of the cab occasionally. Less now than when new. Have always been paranoid about those brakes because of the smell. After 80,000 miles the original pads are almost like new. And they are pads front AND back. No drum brakes.

My '08 F-350 regens often, and I get a heavy diesel odor in the cab at low speeds and stop signs. What do we expect, when they effectively close a damper and shove a potato in the tail pipe. Until it finishes "Cleaning the Exhaust Filter" my exhaust temp ramps up to 950 degrees, and I have to back off throttle to keep temps below 1000 degrees. My frustration is that it usually chooses to do it most when under heavy load pulling grades, never fails to happen when I need max power. [God love the EPA, congress and all other people who set standards without ever having ever worked for a living, or even have a clue what they are impacting with their magnanimous decisions]. Unfortunately the on board computer does not allow a manual reset or override, so I drive until it quits. I get no other odor other than diesel exhaust.

Thanks everyone,

I called my dealer and he is looking into the 35 mph off switch. That makes sense, but who am I.

As I heard it, the first program for the 6.4 didn't have a low speed cut off for regen. Then they thought about the HIGH exhaust temps and started thinking "lawsuit" if for example, a pedestrian got burned, or a car next to you got it's paint blistered in stop and go traffic. Or the exhaust started a wildfire. I'd LOVE to "straight pipe" mine and get rid of the entire thing, but we're in the Republic of California. With the new diesel smog inspection program at registration renewal.

I know all about the Republic of California. I will keep you posted on the truck.

Torben, we are thinking of moving to Idaho. Your insight will be appreciated.

I just ordered this from RV Bookstore, America's Best Low-Tax Retirement Towns.

We love where we're at now, but HATE Sacramento. We mailed in our ballots the other day, but we're not holding on to much hope the mess in SAC will ever get straightened out.

LMM diesel regens roughly once per tank. I had a dealer tell me the manual regen they do at the dealer runs the temp up to 1300.

I had trouble with regens while towing out west this summer. Engine would drop into limp mode while on the interstate. Thankfully my Scan Gage was able to override the limp mode to keep moving down the highway. Eventually, the problem would resolve itself. Only happened in southern Montana and South Dakota over a two day period. Roughly once per tank/same as the regen cycles. Once we got to Iowa, I think the fuel was cleaner??? Talked to two different dealers throughout the ordeal. No resolution to issue. Have not experienced it since.

Actually pulled off the interstate a couple times when the Scan Gage reset would not last for long.

I don't have anything to add to help except remove the stuff and get a programer to turn it off. That cost $$ plus getting caught can be a challenge. Yet another reason to keep my old truck and if it breaks just rebuild it better.

Other then watching my EGT gauge regen is pretty seamless on my new truck, it does lose a little power do to the reduction of boost but thats about it. The one thing i need to remember is to fill the urea tank  you tend to forget about that one.

I though the regen started in the '08 models or am I thinking of something else?

As to the when did it start thing: Any engine built after 1 Jan 07 had to have a DPF, remember the 07 classics and the real 07s? DEF started this year. I know a guy with connections who can get plenty pre emissions 500 hp 1850 ft lbs cummins equipped trucks, bad part is they are in rather large trucks.
