New Truck Tires

Post by Traveler II »

I think it’s time to put new tires on the truck. Only have 36,000 on them and they look good, but this winter we are planning to travel from Minnesota to Arkansas to California and back again, about 8,500 miles so for piece of mind I think I will start getting some prices.

Using personal preference, B.F. Goodrich. I've been using their M+S tires since the early '80s on my trucks. And work trucks when I can. Last tire change I decided to try some Goodyear M+S tires on the work truck, 50k tread life. I haven't used the M+S part yet, but if the increase in gas mileage is an indicator, I better get some chains. Not fond of their handling on grooved road surfaces either, they like to wander around and my high mile worn shocks REALLY became apparent with the Goodyears going down concrete freeways with tar strips. Next tire change I'll put Goodrich tires back on. Oh, my '08 F250 work 4X4 has over 110,000 miles on it since Nov 08 - I cover LOT'S of territory, on and off road. "Traction is Good, Stuck is Bad".

My Ford came with Continentals new. At 50K miles I put 6 new ones on. At 99K miles I put 6 Hankook tires on it. 25K miles later they are still in great shape. I really like the way they handle in the rain. Much better than the Continentals. At this point I would say I will easily get 25K to 35K miles out of them...$125 less each tire! :thumbrt:

Since 2005 I've had BF Goodrich as OEM tires on Ford SD 4X4 trucks. Before that I used Goodrich tires on my '85 Bronco by choice, pulling a 24' Prowler. Good traction, 40k miles plus tread wear, no handling problems. No failures either. There is another long story about why I don't like Goodyears. But, in spite of that, I'm giving them a chance 'cuz I do try to be unbiased. But NOT on my nickel. Goodyears are on the work truck right now, here in the Mojave, with 300 mile runs common per day, off road over sharp rocks, or along the tracks for miles running thru ballast, it's a fair test. I've put up my first impressions at 10k miles, I'll talk about them next at 20k, or sooner if there is a problem.

I have the Hankook tires on my truck as well. The truck had 38,000 miles when I bought it and as part of the purchase deal was they put new tires on it the truck now has 90,000 miles. I was concerned because they were made in Korea and questioned the GMC dealership when I saw them and they pointed out all of their new 3/4 and 1 ton pickups all had them as OEM tires.

I had to replace two tires because I ran over some metal on the highway and blew them out but the remaining four tires are in good shape. I replaced them with Hankook as well.

I have Hankook tires on the Cardinal. Have not had any problems with them at all. Just put them on this past summer and have about 9000 miles on them so far. We travel quite a bit and we'll see how they hold up. Our new pickup came with Continental's. They are holding up very well.

I have Michelin M/S on both the 5th wheel and the truck. The last set I had on the truck I got 70,000 miles out of them, and on the trailer the ones that are on there right now have 40,000 miles. I bought both sets at Costco when they have their sale, which is $ 70.00 off when you buy a set of 4. That is the best price I found any where. :D

I've narrowed it down to getting either the Bridgestone Duravis, which came new on the truck or Michelin M/S tires. Any comments or suggestions on either of them?

I bought my Michelin LT M/S from Costco, I have them both on the Truck and the 5th wheel. I am very happy with the tires and have had no problems with them :D I would have a hard time buying another brand. :thumbrt:

Jim the Michelins are great like everybody says but I had the Duravis tires on my 08 as an OEM tire and they would have went over 40k. Was thinking at the time when I got back from Yellowstone I would have bought another set but we know what happened to that plan :D
