Towing with 3500 6.7 AUTO RAM

Post by Diesel Dave 04 »

Who is towing with the 6.7 ram in a 3500? and how do you like it? I just traded off my 04 F-350 on a 07 3500 Ram 4x4 6.7 6 speed auto. I have not pulled the rv with it yet but it sure seems like the new 6 speed auto sure gets the 650 ft pound of torque to the ground. just wondering how the owners like this set up?
Thanks Dave

I have 08 with the 6.7 with auto in a 2500. I have to say that it is much better than the 04 Ford with the 6.0. The truck will pull great and the trans with the exaust brake is much better on the down grades. I have 20,000 miles on it an I am very pleased.

Randy That is great to hear, I had a 04 3500 ram but the 48RE tranny just did not put what the 5.9 cummins had to the ground untill the converter would lock. It drove me crazy so i swaped it for the 04 ford 6.0 then had to do head gaskets and oil cooler and egr delete. It didnt tow bad but the tranny slipped a few times this past season and the injectors were shot and it needed a turbo. so I traded it in. I really liked my 04 dodge just not the tranny I feel I will injoy this one with the new set up. im seeing 13.8- 14.2 around town is that about right?

I am getting 16-17 in town. My truck is 2500 quad cab short bed 2 wheel drive with 373 rear gear. I am sure it is lighter than your 3500. I have taken it to North Carolina and back, not towing with the cruise on 70 and got 22mpg. This is the first Dodge that I have owned and so far I have no complaints.

Rich I was in need of repairs, Injectors, turbo, and the tranny slipped a few times on me. and it seems the 6.0 trucks are worth less each day. There was really no upgrade with ford. I would have to go to the 6.4 they really never got any MPG to speek of and had a few issues with head gaskes and turbos also. I could not aford to go to the new 6.7 ford though they seem to be a heck of a motor so far. so I had to jump the fence. and I think I will be happy cause i liked my last Ram other then the tranny and that they fixed.

Dave,
I went with the auto this time. The 5.9 Cummins 6 speed was a great combo but I think I will like the 6 speed auto better. I have yet to pull with it yet but I'm looking forward to it. Like others have said before I bought a Cummins, it just came in a Dodge box.

Dave,
I have not owned a Ford so I cannot compare to it. But I have had the 05 Ram srw 5.9 with 4.10 gearing that pulled like a John Deere tractor, and now I have an 09 Ram 6.7 with 3.73 gearing. Since both trucks were auto's, I can say the new six speed blows the fours speed auto away especially going up long uphills. The six speed with it's short gear ratio is a plus...no matter what brand you drive! Dead stop take offs are a different matter because the 3.73 gearing and the new smog bling seem to slow the truck's acceleration down somewhat. On the the old truck, a 50 mph punch would spin the tires...I can't do this with the new truck. :(
Still, this truck is no slouch while pulling a load.

Did you go with the 3:73 for a reson? Mine has 4:10 with the 6 speed auto It really seems nice. I run 70 at 1900 RPM. if you have 3:73 you must run 1750.

It all depends on the whole setup. where the engine makes it HP and torque. My 99 7.3 with 3:73 was good I switched out to 4:10 cause i thought it would be great towing. Well I really didnt see a great differance in power But my MPG when down 2 mpg. Now this Cummins with a 6 speed auto it can be in the torque band at all times with 4:10 gears. that is why didnt push for 3:73 when i was looking for a truck. I would think the 3:73 with the cummins would work great with the 6 speed auto also. My 5.9 cummins with the 4 speed auto and 3:73 did not work so well as a heavy tow rig. it was either lugging or reving to high and out of the torque band.
