Long crank time starting 6.0 PSD

Post by paul7x57mm »

I took my truck to the dealer to investigate why the crank time to start the engine is getting longer.Typically the engine starts in about 2 to 3 seconds after the glow plug light goes out. When it is plugged in on cold days, the engine almost starts immediately. Lately over the past 2 months, it takes about 4 to 6 seconds or longer to start and does not matter if it was plugged in or not. I noticed that if I crank the engine for about 3 to 4 cranks, then start over, it starts right away. It seems dealer to me that it is not getting fuel.

The dealer told me that they believe it is the FICM (Fuel injector control module) and it is not covered under my extended warranty. The cost would be $1,200 and cannot guarentee it is the problem since there are no codes in computer. Since it stil starts, I am going to let it go but It is going to bug me until it gets corrected. Has anyone had this starting issue an found that it is something else?

We have had 2 FICM's replaced but neither for the condition you describe. sounds like it could be a million things, they need the correct oil pressure, oil volume, fuel temp, fuel pressure, moon phase, astrological sign etc to start so if any are off just a smidge it could take a few extra seconds

May have to live with it until it get so bad that it becomes more evident as to what the cause is. It aggrivates me that the part is not covered after spending over 2,000 bucks for extended warranty.

Go to www.thedieslestop.com There are several VERY smart folks there. There is an easy step by step repair for the FICM. Either ask or search for the thread. You won't be disappointed!!

Sorry to hear that Ford is as lame as GM when it comes to warranty coverage. GM will not cover sensors under their 100,000 mile powertrain warranty. Even though their literature and website both say, "complete engine assembly, including turbocharger components." I will never let GM off the hook for that lie. Otherwise, I like the truck and my local dealer for giving me a partial "goodwill" check for $850.

My FICM was replaced while under 100K mile warranty. When they say 5 yr or 100K miles...they hold to it

I would have thought that it would be covered too. Paul must be just outside is warranty or they just can't find anything wrong yet.

when you turn the key on do the injectors buzz while the glow plug lite is on?
also load test the battries even a weak one will make it slow start.
Is it an early 04 or late 04 ?

Does it surge when it starts cold.

Paul I had this happen on my GM. The problem was a leak in the fuel filter. It was allowing the fuel to drain back to the tank and emptying the filter. Replaced the filter and it was fine.

I am out of my 100k warranty by time but under the 100k miles. I purchased an additional warranty good up to 137k miles but the FICM is not covered. They tested it and could not find any codes. The diesel tech said it starts perfect? When I picked it up yesterday, it started in 2 seconds. This morning, it took 5 seconds. I will continue to monitor it.

I will check for the buzz when i turn it on. I do hear some noise but think it tis the glow plugs. It is a 2006 model and not sure if it has some of the same probles as the older ones. Someone mentioned the fuel filter and I am going to check the o9ring to see if it is leaking.

Just remember, there are 2 fuel filters. One on top of the engine and, one mounted on the drivers side frame rail.

Okay...the last month or so I thought that my truck was taking longer to start as well. Tuesday, I went to lunch, went back to the shop. About8 pm, I went to leave, truck would not start. Turns out to be a bad fuel pump. My dealer had one, now its back to running right!
