Trading F250 for GMC or Chevy ??

Post by ddonnaud »

I am contemplating possibly trading off my 2008 F250 6.4L for a new GMC or Chevy 3500 hauler. I am a Ford guy and the truck is solid. The fuel economy is killing me; 13 - 14 when not pulling and 9 when pulling. At these higher diesel prices, I need some relief. Please give me some feedback Ford lovers & Chevy lovers !

I'm pulling the same rig and will be driving from Houston to Robert LA today. Will be staying there for a couple of days if you want to check it out.

Seems that 08 was a bad year for economy, one of the reasons I sold my 08 Freightliner M2. The 07 pre-emissions trucks got 10+ mpg while towing, my post emissions 08 got 8 mpg on a good day down hill with the wind behind it. Although I am going with a HDT (pre-emissions 05) I expect mileage in the same range with much improved power. I understand the DEF (urea) trucks are back up in mileage but with the slight set back of having to buy both diesel & urea. But the overall gain should be in your favor. I have a personal preference toward the GM trucks if you are going with upgraded interior packages, the most comfortable seats and quietest interior I ever experienced was an 07 Chev full on leather with Bose sound. I have since ridden in Mike Clay's Chev and it is even quieter. I would likely travel further per day if I owned one which would spoil my slow traveling lifestyle. I recommend going down for a test drive to see how one feels & I am sure Mike & others can give you economy numbers.

Oooops, got home Friday.
We'll track you down somewhere, considering the UP (Iron Mountain) this summer. I 'll give you a shout if we come through the bigger part of MI coming or going.

I love mine and the urea part costs me around 4.50 per 1,000 miles so really not a big deal.

Bruce

We live about an hour or so south of the UP. Depending when and where you will be we would be interested in meeting up, if it's OK with you. Maybe we could round up one or two others?

Dates are in question right now as I am taking on a promotion at work which likely will shift my schedule, but we do plan to get up there.

I've been getting 18 mpg empty and 12 towing with my 2011 F350 w/ the 6.7.

That is fantastic Russ. Too bad I didn't wait a few years to buy my F250. If fuel prices keep climbing, I may have to sell everything and travel in a SMART car !!!!

You mean like mine? :d 37 mpg running errands, no idea of highway as it has not yet taken a road trip. Only drawback is you can not get a factory cruise, a place in Canada called Smartieparts sells one though and it works well with easy afternoon install.

Well if you sell everything you won't have the Cardinal. I think it would pull a Cardinal, for a very short distance!

I have an 08 Chev 3500 DRW Duramax, I couldnt be happier, I get 11 average towing and 16 average unloaded. I just turned 20k on the truck and its as strong as it was new. When twoing I run about 63 miles per hour, just enough to get it to shift into 6th gear. At that speed its pulling about 1600 rpm, seems its just idling down the road and has amazing power at such a low rpm. Takes a pretty good sized hill to get it to down shift. My truck is also four wheel drive so if you didnt need that you would most likely get a little better mileage.
