will this work ok

Post by hydehunter »

hi everyone first time here. wife and I are going full time later this winter and are looking at buying a new 3150RL and will be towing with a Ford F250 2000 7.3 auto 3.73 gears.even though the truck is 11 years old it only has 101,000 miles. we are going to upgrade with PacBrake exhaust brake and trans command,Banks inter cooler and we have a Super Chips Programmer and set at the 60 HP setting been using this for years.4" exhaust system and airbags on the rear axle.I would like to upgrade to one ton dually but it is not in the cards for a couple of years.I have never owned a 5'r before always pull trailers about 9000 lbs on the current one. the truck is listed to tow a 14,000 fifth wheel and we will be very close to this, my question is will this work for the time being? thanks a lot.

Towed my 3150 for a year with no problems with my 3/4 ton. Towed over 3 of the top 10 passes in the U.S. But you are correct you will be very close to the 14,000 pounds and a pin weight of 2,500 lbs

I say give it a try. You may want to consider a pair of air=bags. You'll probable want to upgrade to a 1 ton when it's feasible.

When we first got our 'Bird we had a 2005 F250 with all the heavy suspension options, and we were "full time" while the house was being built. Our 'Bird's empty 2100# hitch weight is much higher when loaded, we were close to the max loaded weight limit of the F250, even after we moved into the house and put the 'Bird on a diet! The F250 hauled the 'Bird for a couple of years, but I didn't feel comfortable running it that close to the max limits, and it did need some suspension help for the the rear. Switched to the F350 diesel dually which handles the 'Bird's loaded hitch weight, plus a 50 gallon in-bed aux tank/toolbox without requiring any suspension add-on's, due to being well within the trucks load limits.

Hello and welcome. :thumbrt:

I owned a 2005 F250 4x4 cb sb 6.0 when we purchased our 3150. The truck had air bags, 5" exhaust and the SCT programable hand held. The truck pulled the trailer well. It stopped it OK. Last year we travelled from Mich to the Yellowstone Rally and Glacier Rally and back home thru the UP of Mich. The truck performed flawlessly but we never felt comfortable. You can add the F350 rear overload springs.

Our new 3500 GMC dually makes pulling the 3150 so much more relaxing.

Again, welcome to the Cardinal family. :d
