I use gas buddy for local or planning ahead knowing where I will need to stop for fuel. I can tow about 800 miles if needed.

Well......I "splurged" & had a the latest "fifth generation" 62 Gal. "Titan Super Series" aftermarket Diesel fuel tank installed in place of the stock 34 Gal. tank on my 07 Silverado Classic Dually yesterday. I've read on several forums that this is a DIY job but after watching them remove the old tank, install the new, drain the diesel from the old & pump it into the new ( on a lift mind you which I don't have) man was it ever worth the 300 bucks to have them do the job !! Anyway now I have twice the range that I had before , and don't have to worry about filling up while towing.....the piece of mind is worth every cent to me !!!

Extra fuel while towing is great! Salt Lake City to home is 670 miles of mountain country on I15. Fill up at Salt Lake, fill up at home. When I made the trip with a V10 F250 I think I stopped at every town along the way with a 36 gallon tank. Plenty of power, plenty of gas to feed the power.

That was the trip that sold me on two things for towing a 5er: 1. Diesel engine. 2. An aux tank.

Life is GOOD! :d

Peter, I had an Transfer Flow 50 gal toolbox/aux tank installed in my '09 F350 at the Transfer Flow factory, and had it moved to the '12 F350 by a local installer. The toolbox is deep enough to hold my tools, chains, tie-downs, etc. and extends the full width of the truck bed. I also have the lifted bed mount so I can slide plywood, etc. under it, so it extends a few inches above the bed rails, but with a long bed the extra height isn't a factor towing. It meets all the DOT requirements, and never has given me a lick of trouble. Mike has a 50 gallon Transfer Flow tank without the tool box in his truck.

Mine is a KSH 96 gal heated diesel tank with a tool box on top. Also has a 12 volt transfer pump. All alum construction set up as the second fuel tank with the factory selector switch. The original rear tank was removed for the full size spare under the body. This was all installed by the builder when new.

Dang good thing I got one the way I am burning fuel. About to fill up for the second time on the trip and with all the climbing since we hit Forest Grove, OR to here in Verdi I have been in the 10.2 range. Down hill tomorrow then back to the flat lands for a while so I hope its going to come back to where it use to be.

I have been looking for an AUX cas tank for my V10. Transfer-Flow had one 30 for gas for around 2K shiped + installation :(
So I was considering Jerry cans to add to my stock 30 gal tank
Found a custom gas tank shop in FL that is building me a 30 gal tank delivered for around $800.
It will be worth it on our trip to Alaska

An aux tank is nice. We just completed a trip to the San Francisco Bay, 840 miles total, with 180 miles or so driving around there without the 'Bird, on one fill up, in Tehachapi, which is where I put in 64 gallons @ $4.14 at Love's on the return home. That's 22 gallons remaining. Diesel was $4.29 to $4.79 in the Bay Area and along I5.

The hard part is remembering that 1/4 tank on the main tank, my "Do Not Pass" fill up point, is 9 gallons, it feels like you are running on fumes when it gets that low now! :d

I found out on this trip that when filling up at the auto pumps at Love's, you can take your card in to the cashier, tell them which pump you're filling up with diesel at, and avoid the credit limit at the pump.

Nah this is one of those things I don't look for a return on my money I bought it for the convenience of not having to stop everyday and being able to short fill if needed to bypass the expensive towns down the road. I think we we have around 1,300 miles on this trip most towing and I filled up in Red Bluff then short filled in Reno since fuel was 4.19.(40 gallons with 1/2 gallon on me, dang vent tube) Have since driven to Chowchilla and today off to Jackson and will not fill up until this coming Sunday. I zip tied the vent tubes back on top the filler tube so we shall see if that helped when I fill up again, I will be standing back. :?
