Recall On Goodyear Tires

Post by Traveler II »

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. said Saturday that the separation could happen under what it called "severe usage conditions." Goodyear says the separated tread could strike the car and damage it or cause a tire failure.

Goodyear says the recall affects about 40,000 tires made in 2009, including 27,000 in service. It says it will replace the recalled tires with new ones. The tires are designed for trucks, vans and SUVs. Goodyear says it will notify owners and replace the tires for free. The recall will start by March 22.

I can't find which of their tires are going to be recalled. If someone else does, please post.

Also found this: Goodyear is recalling six versions of its Wrangler Silent Armor tires over concerns that the tread could separate from the tire and cause accidents.

I had a Goodyear Wrangler Tire do the "tread separation" at 70 mph on the right rear of a Chevy C/K 3500 company truck. I WAS in the right lane and when the tire went all the truck wanted to do was tumble when I tried to keep in the lanes because of the high center of gravity with a steel utility body, the remaining tire flexing and the right side on the rim. The sidewalls disappeared, just the bead was left on the wheel. I went thru the center median and stopped on the shoulder of the opposite lanes. And the tread followed me and hit the back bumper when I got stopped. Thanks to a alert semi driver, I didn't get into a head on. That was the last of EIGHT Wrangler tires I had to change that summer, all with different failures. All the tires were balanced and kept at the correct inflation. I had to get the Region Director involved, but after this one the lease company agreed to let me put on B.F. Goodrich Radial All Terrain tires.

Over the years since this incident, I have heard of and seen pictures of at least five company vehicles suffering "tread seperation" incidents at highway speed with Goodyear Wranglers. One happened to a local guy I know, he was exiting the freeway when the tire went, he spun out and ended on the truck's right side facing the direction he came from.
