Rock Tamers Mud Flaps

Post by LuvRving »

Hi,

My new GMC Sierra 3500 HD Duramax diesel has arrived...phase 1 of our bucket list...new Cardinal on order.

I was wondering if anyone has used the Rock Tamer mud flap system? I can get a set from Costco and have it in a week. My concern is the clearance between the flap and the diesel exhaust pipe. I imagine it gets kind of hot back there. I also understand the flaps come in black or chrome; any preference?

Thanks!

Cheif409 has a set and at last report in May 2011 he was very happy with them and he will probably be on a little later and post his info about which one to choose.

Mine haven't had any problem with the exhaust temperature with either of the diesels I've had them on. I leave them on, except when I'm pulling a conventional trailer, because I have other hitches with a ball mounted, so why buy another ball.

Some very positive things about the Rock Tamers. They don't take up space in the wheel well, get pinched between the tire and an object while backing up - and they Don't Sail! It makes it much easier to clean up the front of the 'Bird.

I've had Rock Tamers since about 2003. When I purchased my current truck I was able to get new flaps (truck sits higher) at a reasonable cost. They have a wide range of adjustments that you can make. On my trucks the exhaust pointed out the side. I would keep an eye on the flap if the exhaust pipe pointed straight back but that extra large tail pipe piece on the diesels is supposed to mix more air with the exhaust to cool the gases.

At the time I bought mine they did not have a chrome option. If I were to buy a new one I would get the chrome option for the mounting hardware because it would be easier to keep it clean looking. Although it would look pretty I still would not buy their expensive little chrome plate that mounts near the bottom of the flap simply because it has their name on it and not mine.

I also have the Rock Tamers on my truck, like Jeff I leave them on most of the time. They do a good job, in fact in late 2010 I kicked up a piece of 2X4 while pulling the Bird, the flap caught it and deflected it away from the trailer. I got mine at Cabela's.
