Re: To DEF or not?
Ok! I decided to DEF. Bought a 2012 F350 XLT last weekend. My neighbor convinced me as he has a 2011 F350 and has had no problems. I am impressed with the power and the quiet in the 2012 F350. Sure miss my 04 Dodge 3500 so Ford will have to work hard to prove it has the same reliability of the Dodge.

Re: To DEF or not?
My work '08 F250 extended cab has 150K miles of pretty hard duty without major problems. The front end is tight, doors are tight, tranny, transfer case and both diffs are good. Hasn't even needed a front end alignment. The 5.4 gasser isn't burning oil and no leaks anywhere. I'd say the odds are in your favor.

I've found that DEF is really a non-issue.

Only if you forget to keep some handy.
Congrat's on the new truck.
Re: To DEF or not?
I just pick some up when needed John. The truck gives plenty of warning, in fact multiple warnings, and DEF is available everywhere.Travelers wrote: Only if you forget to keep some handy.

From the chemical make-up of DEF, couldn't you just pee in the tank if you run low?

18 months ago, not so readily available so I carried 3 gallons in the rig. Today, I don't carry any.Rob & Cathy wrote:I just pick some up when needed John. Re: To DEF or not?
Well as normal I do things different, I carry 3 to 4 gallons on long trips. i.e. like when going to the national rallies. I only use def from the dealer since there have been many cases when you have a failure the first thing they try to blame it on is def bought from somewhere else. I have heard of many cases where the dealerships will charge you to drain the tanks if you get a poor quality def message. I know, I know there are only so many places that make this stuff but I would rather take one of the arguments out of the equation. Believe me its true been there done that last year. The dealership in Rapid City even tried to blame the def pump failure on my transfer flow fuel tank. One of the reasons I was escorted out of the dealership Jerks.

Re: To DEF or not?
I can certainly appreciate that John. There are so many truck stops that have DEF at the pump I think from now on I'll top-off about every 2000 miles while getting diesel.Travelers wrote:18 months ago, not so readily available so I carried 3 gallons in the rig. Today, I don't carry any.

I top off the tank before we leave on a trip. Then based on miles and terrain, I'll top it off again.
Got to go as it's off to Sam's for buffet lunch.

Re: To DEF or not?
Rob, filling the DEF out of one of the pumps doesn't work very well. I believe it is because the DEF tank does not have a vent to relieve the pressure while filling. I did this one time and I could not believe how long it took to get the stuff in the tank. I could hardly squeese the pump handle without it shutting off. It had to trickle in. I have been told that you can pump the DEF into a container that came from Ford then dump it into the tank. The container from Ford vents back into itself, so it will empty much faster.Rob & Cathy wrote:I can certainly appreciate that John. Re: To DEF or not?
The only time I've tried it at the pump Randy I didn't have the magnetic collar for the nozzle and couldn't get it to flow. I need to get the adaptor and try it again.

Re: To DEF or not?
So if I understand you Ford owners, the convience of your DEF fill position next to your fuel fill is not that much better than my GMC's DEF fill position under the hood fill?
