Spare Tire

Post by Rob & Cathy »

Well I go a bit of a surprise today. As one of my final checks before our trip i checked the trailer's spare tire and found it was a little low at 72 psi. Then a couple of squirts from the air compressor to 79 psi and remounted the tire.

Then I decided to check the spare on the truck for the first time 43 PSI! So for all you guys with new trucks, or have never checked your spare, it's better to be surprised at home rather than alongside the road. 8)

Also age of your spare is an issue. Shame on me! Trucks spare is OEM from June 2001. Trailer's spare is a Michelin XPS Rib from Feb 2005. The other 4 Ribs replaced a year and a half ago were as follows: Three were one year old when installed and one two years old when installed(I now check date codes)!

Thanks for the reminder that I need to address this issue, before it bites me!

Rob, does your truck have the TPMS from Ford? My friends does and the spare was low. It took him several days to figure out how to get the low tire alert to clear. He was letting the air out and putting air in the four tires that were on the ground and trying to reset the system. :)) :)). He did it several time before he checked the spare. I believe that a tire has to be below 40psi to cause an alert.

It does indeed Randy, TPMS is standard equipment on all SRW Super Duties excluding the spare tire. It's interesting that you mentioned the spare tire because of all the vehicles I've owned with TPMS it never occurred to me that the spare would be monitored.

You may be right Don. My thought is that I had the original tires for two years with no problems and since the spare has never been use it will be good enough to get me to a place to where I can buy new tires if needed.

You probably have Loadstars. I had to use my Goodyear Marathon spare last year when my rim broke. Was :-ss all the way to Jackson but all went well and my pit crew took care of things when I got there.

I would normally agree Rob except when I took off my Kenda's the spare which was only on the ground less than 30 miles had a bubble on the inside when it was removed from the rim.

I had less than 1,000 miles on mine and I had the one tire that started to separate at the cap but did no damage Thanks to an alert young man driving beside me noticing the dust being blown up, as well as another one on the ground and the spare with less than 30 miles on the ground which had bubbles inside when they were removed to be replaced.

So you see my reason for the double :-ss :-ss concern!

It's a Trailer King Radial. It appears to be made by TBC Corporation.
