Most original factory warranties cover your powertrain through 50,000 to 60,000 miles. Some, like Dodge cover 100,000 miles. Extended warranty could "BUY" you up to 75K to 100K miles. Cost at an average of $1200 to $1500 or more, depending on your negotiating skills at purchase time. Risk is, will you break down between 60K to 100K miles. Chances are, knock on wood, in most cases you will not loose your engine or transmission if you take good care of your vehicle. I'm a gambler, so I opt to not buy these extended warranties. So far, knock on wood again, I've been lucky. I've been told by others through experience, the third party extended warranties are a hassle to deal with through your normal dealerships. Also, outsourcing to smaller repair shops, could significantly escalate the hassles. If you have a good, trusting dealership, talk with the service managers. Possibly they could steer you in the right direction.
