4 wheel drive-versus rear wheel drive

Living in Minnesota 4 wheel drive trucks rule especially at selling time. But in the winter we are out of there and I’ve only used the 4-wheel drive a few times on our present truck. I’m thinking of getting a rear wheel drive on our next truck, not sure if they still make positive traction, but that might be an option.

What are your thoughts of 4 wheel versus rear wheel drive for a tow vehicle?

My 08 quad cab short bed 2500 Dodge was 2 wheel drive, that is the only reason that I don't have it now. It seems that with the heavy diesel in the front that there is no weight on the rear axel. It would not move on level ground in wet grass. I had to be pulled out several times and the rear wheels were not more than 2" deep in the wet grass. I did have a 2 wheel drive crew cab dually that was not that bad. It could be because of the longer wheel base. Both trucks had posi-trac.

Where we live 2x4's are hard to resell!

Up side, lower cost, better mileage, less maintenance and less weight=more Carrying Capacity.

One does get back more than the extra cost of 4x4.

Every RV and truck forum has pages and pages devoted to the 2x4 vs 4x4. Its kind of like gas vs diesel. Its just a personal preference. Like WVCamper we had a couple of instances of getting stuck on wet grass or slightly damp ground so the last three TVs have been 4x4. I'm sure there are many like me that are to that point in life to where cost is not a factor and secondary to the 2x4 or 4x4 decision. Convenience and safety are worth more than the 4x4 extra cost and is our primary driver. This is not putting anyone down its just different strokes for different folks.

Did the 2 wheel drive with the 'Bird on wet grass. Didn't work well. Shifted into 4Hi and walked out. Or getting started when you stop on a steep slope on gravel. 2 wheel, toss gravel into the trailer, 4Hi or 4Lo you walk out. I haven't had a 2X4 in over 30 years.

Might not use is as often now, but "Peace of Mind"...

Its been 46 years for me since I had a two wheel drive.. We do use ours off and on through out the winter in our travels. I have always said "its better to have it and not need it then to need it and not have it."

Here in the Great White North, 2 wheel drive HD trucks are almost non-existent. They are impossible to sell or trade.
