Short Bed Without A Slider Hitch?

Post by Traveler II »

Is anyone using a short bed truck without a slider hitch?

Reason I ask is we are exploring getting a new truck and would like a crew cab with a short box. We’re using an air hitch that is not a slider and really like it and would like to keep it. We also have and extended pin on the trailer that gives some extra space between the truck and the trailer, but I’m not sure its enough.

That's all I've ever used and never had a problem. With the extended pin, you can easily tow these trailers with a short box. Randy

I also have a short bed with an extended pin box and have never had an issue. My trailer cap clears the cab on 90 degree turns with room to spare.

Hi, all! We use a sliding hitch in our Dodge short bed. Our 30TS has an extended pin, but it lacks about 6" of coming to the front of the cap. I do have a question that I'll bet some of you can answer. Somewhere in my travels, I got the idea that a short bed Chevy has several inches of bed ahead of the axle more than Ford or Dodge. I know some folks who can tow with their Chevys. Are they built a little differently? Thanks, Roy & JoAnn

We have a short bed with a slider hitch and I was backing without using the slider and have a nice dent on the driver side of the cap :( Any time I am backing close to a 90 degree I use the slider. Not a big deal once you get use to it :!:

I was wondering if you have an extended pin or not on your trailer?

Don't think it is an extended pin, the pin is directly under the front of the cap.

The only time you may have a concern is IF you are on uneven ground. In that situation a 90 degree turn could cause the front cap to hit the truck cab. For that reason I have a slider and I confess I have always been careful and never had to use it.

Aside from our RV biz, we have a body shop. We fix 8 to 10 cabs per season. One guy we fixed 3 times before his wife came in and therw her credit card on my desk and told me to order a pull rite and dont tell hubby till it got there! Some clear...some do not. Only one way to find out when it dosen't

I have a short bed truck and an extended king pin. In Disney world I wish I had a sliding hitch. Put a nice dent in cab. The truck was only 4 months old. I now have a sliding hitch. Worth the money when you need it.
