Well not true. GVW on mine is 11,600 or something like that. The dually is 13,025

I think you are talking about trailer weights. It use to be that several models (SRW and DRW) had the same GCWR (Combined weight rating). So the lighter the truck, the heavier the trailer it could tow on paper. That formula ignored the pin weight issue.
In recent years the manufacturers have greatly changed ratings and how they do it.
I see the color White in Mike's future, the axles ratings in 2011 are about 2,000 lbs. different, total towing for 5th wheel about 4,000 lbs., and payload 1,900 lbs.
I think those ratings are higher in 2012.
Just looked in my manual.

So here is a real dumb question. I understand why the payload of the truck goes up but why does the trailer towing rate go up so much? Same engine, trans and such.

A friend of ours just got a new dually and he thinks that it doesn't ride as nice, I would think that the ride would be better?

Mike, I know you are a Chevy guy. OK. Ford offers F450, and F550 options which are much more affordable and easier to maneuver than the MDTs. They come in dual rear wheel configurations, have 19" wheels, and can have custom beds installed. They offer gear ratios and higher GVW ratings than the 3500 series offers. I have seen F450s with standard beds. Does Chevy/GMC have a comparable truck? California taxes us for commercial plates on pickups based on GVW. An F450/550 would cost plenty here, but not as much as MDT models. Some states require those trucks to pass through commercial scales, which would be a pain. I need to brush up on my GM knowledge. I have considered the F450, but I am well under max with my current rig. Since you are now in the "big leagues" are you really over weight on your current rig?

OK, I just read how Alice is heavy on the next forum. Is that weight with all of your customization finished? Is your new water tank at the rear like our older models? That offsets some hitch weight. Perhaps Rudy has too many toys aboard... These new models are beautiful and very comfortable, but you are living what I fear with a new trailer. They just keep getting larger (heavier).
