Little quick on that oil change aren't you Mike? I normally would have done mine the same but when i asked at the dealer they were emphatic about waiting longer, I finally went in at 5K and that's the interval I'm trying to stick with since they are using a synthetic blend oil. I also got a "check coolant additive" message just short of 12K, they use a limus type test strip to check the coolant additive. My truck's DEF usage has really varied, but like Rob seems to have settled to 1 gal per 1000 miles.

Quick, not at all. Its dino oil for the engine and really the spin on filter for the transmission probably should have been done earlier. But the Allison magnet looked pretty clean so all is well. I was already down to 68% left on the oil filter for the engine due to the new engine break in. Now I will go to 5k oil changes in the future, or when I get below 50% on the readout, whichever comes first.

Have some pretty good passes getting to Albq and better safe then sorry.

I had my first oil change early too at around 3K. Since then it's every 5-7K. Haven't touched the transmission yet.

Allison has a very expensive exterior spin on filter that you change the first 1 to 2k miles. There is a magnet in there that needs to be cleaned also. They just add a little more fluid in to replace what was in the filter. Tranny is now good until 50k miles.

Does anyone with one of these new generation trucks do their own oil, filters, and other routine maintenance, or have they become to complex for that? You open the hood to a sea of "things"!

I can see the ground down both sides of my old Dodge/Cummins engine room!!!!
I was able in install a new injection pump myself at 52K. I was able to move the lift pump to the frame rail and then install a better aftermarket pump.
I know that these new trucks are miles ahead of the older ones, however they seem to be tethered to the dealers service department much tighter!
To date I have never owned a vehicle that routinely went to the dealer for service.

Darlene and I sat in a new Dodge 1500 at the Puyallup Fair Sunday! Sure was nice cab!!!!!

Well in my case I use to change my own oil and fuel filters in my Dodges but there is no way I want to even try it in the new (in my case Chevy). No I can't see the ground.

This is my engine in the 2011

A lot of the 6.7 guys seem to do their own routine maintenance on their trucks Chris. The oil changes and fuel filter chances seem pretty straight forward. There are videos on Youtube showing the procedures.

Well hopefully I wont jinx myself. But since I have driven in many different conditions now pulling Alice I have to say the truck does a great job with the stability and power. Fuel mileage is not the best but seems to be holding around 10.3 mpg. I had a warning come on that said check trailer wiring. All lights on the trailer were working but of coarse no trailer brakes. Unlike Bruce and the two big reds coming into the rest area you find out really quick you need those trailer brakes. Problem turned out to be plug came loose so all was well after that.

Well after I bought a 3850rl and found out that my 2500 was a little on the small side, and I needed to get a dually, but didn't have a lot of extra money laying around I started to look for a used dually. We found a nice 2012 Denali that had 37000 miles on it drove real nice and it wasn't going to cost me very much to trade, so we jumped at it. We have had it about 2 weeks and the check engine light came on. Took it to the dealer and they said that the turbo needed to be replaced. It was a one owner pickup and they think that the previous owner my have put a chip in it. I can't believe that some one would do this to a new truck. this should be covered under warranty, so now I think I will by an extended warranty. If they will let me. I hope I still have a warranty on the drive train.

Turbo failure is pretty rare on the Duramax. Keep us informed.

Did you buy it from a GM dealer, or private owner ?
I can tell you the dealers can tell everything thats has been done to the truck from the computer system, timing changes, transmission shift patterns, RPM's during driving loads, etc.
Now days no one can hide chip use or bad driving practices after plugging into the dealers computers, it going to be hard pressed to get them to honor the warranty unless a GM dealer sold the truck to you.

You do bring up a good reminder now that before buying a used truck to have a factory dealer check the computer for pass practices that would void the warranty, I do not think I would have thought about doing a dealer check.
Hope it works out for you.

I did buy it from a GM dealer. They said that they did not know of any problems with the truck.
