Tranny Problems - truck is Home from the Hospital!

Post by snoking »

Last winter in Arizona the truck started to hunt between first and second gear while cold. Well, DTT that built the tranny said Governor Pressure Sensor or Solenoid, replace them both. So today I finally dropped the pan!! And I found broken hard parts in the pan!!!! Drats!!

That's what happened to us last year, $4500 later and the tranny still wasn't right so DW said I HAD to get a new truck. Can you believe that? When was the last time your DW said you HAD to get a new truck? The new Fords sure do pull the rig nicely. Of course the new GM products and new Rams will also probably do a good job, plus they all have that great new vehicle smell.
Looks like you do a lot of your own mechanical work so you may be able get by for less, plus you won't have to mod another vehicle. Good luck with what ever you decide to do.

If you were here I could get you a deal. I have a close friend that is a Mopar Trans specialist. He has about 25 years experience. He has built several for off road trucks, drag and dirt cars. I noticed that you are running the high capacity aluminum pan. Are you running an upgraded torque convertor too? Looks like alot of shavings on that magnetic plug. How long has it been since the last rebuild? It will still be a fraction of the cost of a new truck :thumbrt: Good that you found it before being broke on the road. :ymapplause:

I had a 2001 dodge in Branson last year truck would not shift out of first. They wanted $2500 to look at it and tell me how much it would cost to fix.. Drove home a new GMC.

Mike, something is going on with DTT, they are not answering emails and not returning phone calls.

VWcampers: It is a complete custom built tranny. At 30K I had it built as a towing tranny with a 89% torque converter. It was built by a company in BC Canada known as DTT (Diesel Transmission Technology), which was one of the best back in 2004. We added their smart controller to control TC lock up and then I installed a Banks Exhaust brake. Also a timing box and stage 1 injectors. It puts down around 325HP and 650T at the rear wheels, which is a mild Dodge/Cummins build. DTT trannys are running with a lot more in many cases. Maybe your friend could tell by looking if the broken parts are from the front band. It was having a first to second gear hunting shift issue when cold, and the front band is what engages 2nd.

Custom Built 30K
Serviced at 50K by DTT
Serviced around 75K by DTT
Current 110K
Amsoil ATF. I red bottle of Lubeguard.

If this is the same place Chris, they may be out of business.

Rob, I believe that is the location of their old shop. They moved to Chilliwack. However they still may be gone!!!

Just saw a Caddy/Chevy mechanic down on the dock and he give me a reference for who he says is the best tranny shop in the area. I will take the broken pieces and pan for them to look at tomorrow.

Made contact with DTT today. They no longer do shop work on vehicles, however still supply transmissions and parts kits. Talked to Bill on the phone and they followed up with emails.

This afternoon we test drove another 2013 RAM 3500 long box SRW Laramie 4x4 with Aisin transmission 385hp/850tq! Has everything we want except factory hitch prep and wheel to wheel step bars. Has a sun roof that we do not want to pay for!
