B10 Diesel

Post by EAW »

Stopped at a Pilot station today for fuel and all they had was a B10 blend. I checked my owner manual and nothing above B5 is recommended. It is a 2007 classic without the regen system. I moved on and got fuel elsewhere but was wondering if I really needed to. The way things have been going on this trip I really didn't want to ask for more trouble.

I know we have some really good diesel people in this club so please advise. Thanks.

In my 2004 dodge I use to run 50% bio. In Portland all the diesel pumps in the city are 10%

All I know is that ethanol in gasoline engines is hard on injectors and O-rings, leading to premature failure. Besides that, performance and mpg decreases. I experienced less mpg in my diesel in Minnesota and Dakotas that had ethanol mandated by law to support corn farmers. Give me 100% gasoline and diesel any day.

Bio Diesel is the best lubricant you can put in a diesel. Of coarse the colder it is the less you can put in since it will gel. I really do not think 10% will hurt anything. The problem people were having with Bio other then some of the rubber type lines in older vehicles was plugging up the fuel filters since it cleaned out all the gunk.

My owners manual says no more than 5% but sometimes there isn't any other choice locally than a higher blend. I change my fuel filters every 10K and drain my water separator monthly as recommended by my dealer. In the colder months, or if the truck is going sit a bit, I put in the Motorcraft cetane booster. So far so good.

I believe when you get diesel at Love's they only have Bio Diesel and it is not always labeled. A few stations are 5% but most are 10%. I like it because you get better lubricant properties than the ultra low sulfur diesel!

I have used 10% several times with no adverse affects, I try to find stations that sell standard diesel! but if you are on the road and getting low! put in the 10%

I ended up at a Shell station on the Florida Turnpike and the pump had nothing about the fuel other than being ultra low sulfur. Sounds like the B10 would of been OK. I had about 1/2 tank already so maybe with the mix I would of ended up at about B5 anyway. Just didn't want to ask for more trouble. Thanks.

The lubricating aspect adds a new twist to the discussion. I was not aware of it, but like recycled French fry oil used by some it could keep your pipes cleaner. More Power!

All diesel fuel sold at Truck stops is ultra low sulpher. The refiners are suppose to add a lubricants to the fuel . I always run Howes in my semi year around it lubricates the pump and injector housings pervents jelling and disapates water . Diesel kleen or other like products work as well also. Nothing sucks worse then a jelled up fuel flter in 0 degree weather.
