The Service Mgr at Loveland Ford called me promptly at 0830 this morning. I explained the error messages I got and the sequence of events. He said he would get to the analysis this afternoon and call me this afternoon with the analysis. No call.
I don't know if that means it is a complicated fix or they just didn't get to it until too late in the afternoon. Will keep everyone posted.

Well supposedly my Ford F350 was fixed late yesterday. Ford replaced under warranty the Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor. He said that sensor, which evidently doesnt' go bad often, gave a false reading on the DEF warning. We shall see.
I can't get back to Fort Collins until Feb 28th so I will ask my son who leaves near Loveland to pick up the truck and drive it around but primarily in city driving. My theory is that if there is a problem or the Exhaust Gas Temperature sensor is not the only problem that the vehicle will heat up fast in stop and go, slower driving.
I truly hope the sensor is the problem cuz if it goes bad again, especially if I am towing, I will be forced to consider giving up on that awsome Ford engine.

That is a common problem that people are having whenever they get the stop safely now message. Gotta get one for the glove box just in case I am on the road with the bird.

I dont know if its true or not, but I was told DEF freezes at 17 degrees, its mostly water anyway. Just wondering?

DEF does start to freeze somewhere around 15 degrees, however, the solution is blended such that the water and urea freeze simultaneously so separation doesn't occur. THere is a heater element or some type of heat that is applied to the DEF tank and the tubing leading to the exhaust system that thaws the DEF before injection into the exhaust. I researched this quite a bit in the past week and it appears that the DEF freezing is not a problem. Given it was regularly -19 at my house prior to the trip to Northern Colorado, and I had no problems during that trip north, I guess I believe the theory that frozen DEF is not the culprit.

You see many of these same issues this time of year when the weather gets cold. Does not take much to set off a code if it does not un thaw. Also nox sensors and such go off in a short period of time. But who knows with all the sensors in these new trucks.

For any Ford owner that wants to learn the location etc of the sensors, I understand you can down load your year coffee table book here.

http://www.forddoctorsdts.com/coffee_table_books.html

I found it on this thread that talks about sensor failures, which appears to happen way to often on the 6.7.

Snoking, thanks much for the info. I did some more research on the link you provided and also came up with the idea of carrying an extra EGT sensor. There are 4 of them, interchangeable and use a 1/2 in socket. The codes it throws are also below.

EGT roadside assistance kit, $60. Or you can wait an hour or 2 for a tow truck.

Temp Sensor, AC3Z5J213B, $34

Code reader, $24

Re: my 2012 F350 died today

You aren't gonna believe this. The absurdity of this whole episode with the Truck dying and getting fixed continues. Today my son goes to the Ford dealer in Loveland to pick up my truck, drive it around and then park it at his house until I can pick it up next weekend.

My son goes to get in the truck and he notices the driver's side taillight is broken. He goes back into service (who had just given him the keys) and asks if they are aware the taillight is broken. (He knows I would have said something two weeks ago when we were visiting). Service Mgr said "Oh, I thought they had fixed that! The part was supposed to be received." My son immediately calls me and tells me about the damage. He didn't not see other damage but admitted he didn't look hard because the weather was crappy.

I immediately call the Service Mgr and ask WTFO? He says that last Thursday a woman had backed into my truck and broke the taillight. I asked if there was any other damage and he said "They told me no." So then I ask, if he had looked at the truck for damage and he said "No, I have been tied up in a couple of major problems"... remember this was last Thursday when it happened. I then proceeded to ask him how could there be no other damage when the taillight sits above/behind the bumper and the bumper is 2.5 to 3 ft off the ground. So after I calmed down I asked him to personally inspect the vehicle for damage. He then volunteered to take it to the Ford Body Shop and let them look it over. He said he would call me by 3:30 today with the prognosis on when the taillight would be replaced and if there was any other damage.
As of 7PM tonight I still don't have a call-back.

I then made the statement that I trust Loveland Ford's insurance would cover the damage as the truck was in their custody at the time of damage. He said "No". I had to calm down again before I said in other words "It will be a cold day in heck before I pay for damage that occurred on their property". He then said that the lady's insurance who backed into me would cover the damage (Keep in mind that a broken taillight cannot be that expensive!).

Meanwhile I still don't know if the EGT replacement that initially caused the truck to die is really fixed. Just because a dealership that is already proven to be untrustworthy says a vehicle is repaired does not give me great confidence. I am seriously contemplating writing a letter to the owner of Loveland Ford to tell him how poorly his service department is managed.

I am starting to think what I thought one month ago is the perfect truck is now a jinxed vehicle.

Finally was able to drive up to Loveland and pick up the F350 on Saturday. Drove it home yesterday without problems. THe repair invoice unfortunately didn't say which codes popped on the EG sensors so I am not 100% certain which one was replaced. The tail-light was also replaced at Ford's cost but the vehicle is still too dirty to see if there are any other scratches due to the tail-light being knocked out.

I have decided though to purchase an extra sensor and keep it in the truck just to make sure I never get caught on the road again due to an EG sensor failing....as evidently the 2011-12 F350s are prone to do.

Keith,

Have you thought about getting an Edge Insight for your truck? Not only can you monitor all sorts of information from the computer it also does a good job of reading trouble codes. I've found it to be a valuable tool for towing and the Insight is not a tuner so there is no way to monkey with the truck programming.

Keith, sorry about your vehicle getting damaged. It really is a bling shoot when you take your vehicle to a dealer and hope to get the same good treatment from the dealer you bought the vehicle from.
