Glow Plugs Keep Quiting

Postby LuvRving » Wed Jul 16, 2014 11:35 am

Since June 2nd. I've had to replace 2 glow plugs. The engine light comes on and the garage has replaced number 4 on June 2nd and number 5 today. They wouldn't or couldn't let me speak to the mechanic about the implications for towing etc with a faulty glow plug. Can anyone tell me if the glow plug is only to assist in starting the engine or are there other issues such as loss of power etc. The truck seems to perform well on the way to the dealership. I haven't had a glow plug fail while towing.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge of glow plugs.

Only for starting in cold weather as far as I know. They shut off pretty quick and stay off while the truck is warm.

The glow plugs only are used for cold start. I had 2 of them go in a couple of weeks last year. I would not be worried except that with the SES light already lit you won't know if something else goes wrong.

I had a glow plug fail while on our way to the Florida Keys last year. Towed all the way from Missouri with no loss of power. :thumbrt: What the others said is spot on.
