2008 chev sevice trailer brake warning "stranded"

Post by Jash »

We departed Grand Forks this morning headed to glacier. About 40 miles down the road I got a service trailer brake warning on my DCIS and lost trailer brakes. I checked the plug and it was tight. Next I unplugged the connection to the trailer and still had the warning on the DCIS, seems light a issue with the truck. I have checked for moisture in the truck connections and all are dry. Any Ideas out there. The problem is I cant get into a chev dealer to have it check till next Tuesday.

I took the truck to the chevy dealer, it was the pressure sensor mounted on the brake master cylinder.

Had similar problem between our Bird and the F350 last Spring during our trip home. In my case the warning was "No Trailer Connected" and therefore the electronics would not energize the brake circuit. Traced the problem to a faulty connection at one of the brake drums on the trailer. The Ford electronics look for the current draw of the brake magnets and if it is not there the brake circuit is not energized. I suggest you may have a similar issue. Check the connections at each wheel and also make sure you have a good ground connection.

Good Luck and have a good day.

The problem is its still coming on with the trailer disconnected. This is the first time I have had an issue on the road and the big problem is I cant get into any dealers till next week, one of them said the 28th. This is a huge issue when traveling and your over 1000 miles from home.

Have you checked for trailer brake fuse?

I checked the trailer brake fuse and integrated brake controller fuses in the truck, both were good. Pulled apart the two trailer connections, the bumper mounted connection and the fifth wheel connection and both looked good. I inspected the fifth wheel cable and it didn't show any wear or rubs. Does anyone know if the warning should reset if the trailer cable is unhooked. Like I said the warning is still on even with the camper disconnected from the truck. Also does anyone know what the resistance should be if I read the trailer connection to ground for brakes.

If you're in a campground would one of your neighbors let you plug into their trailer to test? Would they bring their truck over to test your trailer? That should help you isolate the issue to either the truck or trailer.

Good luck.

There are some campers but I don't know anyone and I wouldn't want to create an issue for their trucks.

Since you get the message with the trailer disconnected I wonder if it's the brake pressure sensor on the truck.

Reading your problem to my hubby, he said: Sometimes disconnecting the batteries from the truck, waiting a couple of minutes , and then reconnecting the batteries... by doing that, it will allow the computer in the truck to reset...... Keep us posted... sort of like turning OUR computers off and rebooting to see if it clears a glitch....

I agree with Double D's suggestion, try the battery disconnect and see if it resets the electronics and clears the fault. I would also check with you fellow campers, in my experience I have never met a stranger in an RV Campground. Most folks in the campground are more than willing to lend a hand or suggestions as they might find themselves in a similar situation and need assistance.

Good Luck folks.

I got the same message several years ago. I hadn't had the trailer hooked up in several weeks. The truck was still under warranty so took it in. I think they said it was the module mounted on the frame near the left rear wheel. I'm sure there are other possibilities so you will need to see a dealer.
