AARP Health Insurance

I am getting ready to make the "old age" health insurance decision. I am thinking of going with AARP - Plan J Does anyone have any good or bad comments on AARP. We have our vehicles and house through them, and have had no problems.

Any comments on this will be greatly appreciated.

If you are going to use the plan as a supplement to Medicare, AARP has some good plans. The problem that you might encounter is that not all physicans will accept every plan. Hershey Chocolate put the post 65 retirees on a plan thru Advantra Freedon which was an F plan and 85% of the Doctors in our area would not accept it. I was able to get them into a AARP Medicare Complete plan through Secure Horizon which is an HMO and they only had to pay $10 a month more than their previous plan.

My suggestion would be to check the plan J you are looking at and see if your current DR. and specialists you use will accept it. Check their formulary for drug coverage and what the cap is on drugs before you get into the donut hole where you wind up paying the full cost of your meds. Also what the coverge would be in a emergency situation when you are away from you area.

Check your local area and see if they have a senior advocacy agency as they are usually very helpful with these issues. Check with senior friends in your area and see what plans they have.

I am 6 years away from having Medicare and my knowledge is only from working with the Hershey retirees as an adavocate.

Tony I can tell you that in the almost 6 years since the original post the insurance issues in the United States have gotten even more confusing than it was 6 years ago!

Don, are the rumors true that you will be throwing yourself (and your fellow campers) a big 65th Birthday party celebration at the National Rally in July? This rumor, after all, is the primary reason Sher and I signed up for the rally...we heard you throw great parties!

Last Oct. went on Medicare. Chose c plus with blue cross. I had too many questions aarp could not answer Found out it was a United Healhcare policy that most doctors would not except

We've had AARP, (United Health Care), supplement plan TW for the last 6 years and have not had a problem getting care. We're on the road about 6 months a years and have not been turned down yet. We did switch our prescription drug plan to Humana Enhanced (PDP), it was a little bit cheaper.

As Don said you do need to check with your doctors AND very important, check the part D (Rx) insurance to make sure you current prescriptions are covered and at which tier they are covered. Different companies cover different meds differently. Good luck finding plans that work best for you.
